Oh, it's got a pulse, alright!
I've got a big analysis spreadsheet to which I off-load data, run it around a bit, and out pops the trading tools that allow me to look out at a broad market, with a single sheet of paper. Yay, me.

But that spreadsheet data has been, in the last two weeks, configured up to
    2075 -- 2425, Wow!! But then
    2100 -- 2450 Sheeesh! That was a good idea!
    And now, freakin',
    2125 -- 2475.

    2475!!! What the Hellllllll?

For so long, I had to hand-fill the high points because options were not offered at every strike, above, like, 2100. 2200. And now, things get spotty ABOVE 2500?!?!?!?!?

    Sheeesh!

Honestly, I don't think the ES won't pay your bills if you work with the traditional pattern i.e. trade the open for 2 hours, lunch, trade the closing hour.

You have to look at stocks. They trade actively for the first 30mins to 1h and then action dies and it's just an algo fest.

I think you should branch out and go back to your ES when volatility comes back. Look at the YM, GC or heck look at the ES overnight session during EU opening hours. There is more tradeable movement than during RTH with all the back and forth.

I'm sure everyone here is hoping for the big crash to cash in again on the short timeframe...but that's exactly why it is not coming :)

Maybe right, H123; most likely slop+ chop will not last for year$.....OCT can be a real bear killer. NOt a prediction; + congrats on your new system.Beside$ Modern Trader magazine noted average MAR, S& P gain is 20%[LOL + most likely meant 2.o %]. Wisdom is profitable to direct

  5. Agree with you brother, I usually bang out 80 ticks on average during volatile environments but with current environment, I'm lucky to consistently get 12 ticks out of ES because the chop is brutal.

Hence, I've slowly transitioned to CL, GC, ZB, USD/JPY until volatility starts to pick up again in the indexes...... on the other hand I highly recommend to look at TF, has larger swings relative to ES.

I still do not understand the appeal of the ES as opposed to other instruments. Its range is often so so terrible, yet so many folks insist on trading it to the exclusion of everything else out there. And there is a LOT of "everything else out there" to trade.

    Why is it so popular?

It can accommodate size and until recent months, it's been a pretty good trader.

What kind of "size" are we talking about here? 10 ct? 100 ct? What is the average size of trade that the average ES trader is flinging about?

I have no idea what the "average" ES trader does but most major futures markets will accommodate up to 10 without much of an issue. The ES will easily absorb much more.

GC can certainly accommodate up to 10 without an issue also...? So why the hang-up with ES from so many people? Drives me batty.
