Lack of Short Orders on NYSE

  1. forgive the stupid question, but can't you just short to the highest bidder on arca no matter what the last tick was?

  2. dont know if this is what you are talking about but I used to see ppl chase stocks down like 15-20 cents with about 400,000 shares trying to get short it was like free money if you could figure out a way to get short or were already short all you had to do is follow the order until someone decided to buy it and get rid of it, havent seen it much lately is this what you are referring too? also seems like on all of the high volume NYSE stocks the specialists lately are stacking ridiculous fake size every single level for 3 cents either way dont know whether or not this is a trick they just learned but it seeemed to have started with Ford and now everyone is copying that thief, I have just gotten used to it now.

anyone got any input on the volume leaders with the NYSE all showing fake size now?

  3. I think the edge of trading the "market short" started to really diminish a year or so ago. I havent seen too much of a change in the last 5 weeks like you've mentioned, things look the same to me as they did 6-12 months ago. I have several conversions myself and they are still very effective.

Havent heard of new hedging techniques, although I'm not really in the loop. Just trying to make a living day to day :D

  4. Hamlet

    Hamlet

Decimilization, NX, SHO have all led to the demise of these types of tape-reading strategies and opportunities, but it took place over the last four years not four weeks, and has been pretty much dead for some time now already (except for nx monkey penny scalpers looking for a few cents here and there... is that you?)

  5. never got a response to this one so I thought I'd try again seems like all/most of the volume leaders are showing 200,000 shares on each level 3 cents deep on each the bid and the offer now and when it approaches they pull to show the real size, this was started a while back on Ford but it seems like they are all doing it now anyone know what this is all about?

  6. Some days all I can get is 5 cents here 10 cents there but I will take it if thats what is available. Other days, its 20, 30, 50 cents or more. Basically I will bust my ass for the time being to maximize what is out there. No shame in that right?

  8. Hey Bill, I agree that the moves created by the market short sellers have been less effective. My observation was that ever since the SHO rule came into play, the moves became diminished for most stocks for whatever reason. I have heard that a few years ago, it was a whole different ball game. I really dont think those big short sellers are from the normal day trading firms.

  10. I'm definitely seeing more orders coming in and cancelling. I don't know if it's the specialist or someone else.
