As with any organization run by mankind, corruption takes hold pretty quickly, and some organizations (like unions) lend themselves to that kind of corruption. Unions would have a great purpose if they did what they were supposed to do, like many other things. But their main purpose is to enrich those at the top and those at the top could care less about those they are supposed to represent. Funny how people in favor of unions seem to think those at the head of the union are honest but those running those "poor old honest corporations" are not. I never was much impressed with hypocrisy.
Funny how people in favor of corporations seem to think only unions are dishonest. And often gubmint too, especially Dem gubmint. I was never much impressed {nor should anyone else be} with those who only see what they want to see.
%% IBD likes to ask ''leader or laggard??'' In the case of union labor leader Jimmy Hoffa\ add '' convicted crook'' ''Crook ??" Yes convicted crook , jury tampering, bribery, mail+ wire fraud I think police unions are a good idea in case of spineless mayors.
Unions, OSHA, EPA, State Wildlife agencies, etc. etc. etc. owe their existence to a genuine need. But those that run the organization quickly change the focus onto themselves. Just human nature. Not much you can do about it except be ever vigilant and think out your actions carefully.
I think it depends on the union. As with all things, painting with too broad a brush is itself the province of the gullible, those that can only regurgitate that which they are told. Especially now.
