  4. Suit Eyed Over Wrong ID of Bryant Accuser

EAGLE, Colo. - The family of a young woman wrongly identified on the Internet as Kobe Bryant's accuser is demanding that Web site operators remove her photograph.

Beth Matthews, the mother of the wrongly identified woman, said Thursday that her daughter was upset to see two photographs of herself, apparently lifted from a high school Web site, spread to hundreds of sites and viewed by people around the world.

Strangers in Internet chat rooms rate her appearance while others make judgments about her character, sometimes using four-letter words, Matthews said.

"I keep telling her these comments are not about you," Matthews said. "But I don't think the real person should have to go through this either."

Her 18-year-old daughter is a year younger than the woman who accused the Los Angeles Lakers superstar of sexually assaulting her June 30 at an exclusive mountain resort.

Both young women graduated from the same high school and have similar first names and hair color, but they don't bear much resemblance to one another.

Matthews said her daughter, a straight-A student, soccer player and dancer, was working three part-time jobs this summer, saving for her freshman year of college in the fall, when she learned that the photographs were posted on the Internet last week.

Since then, she has come home from work early some days because it has been difficult to escape the talk about the case and the mistaken use of her picture.

Reporters call on her cell phone and show up at her house. Matthews said her daughter hesitates before going out to the supermarket in this town of 3,500.

"She just can't get away from it," she said. "It's just not stopping. There's no relief."

Matthews said her daughter, an acquaintance of the alleged victim, has been obsessively spending hours online each day finding out where the photos have spread and seeing how they have been doctored. One site features her daughter's head imposed on the photograph of a nude woman.

One photograph shows her daughter smiling at the prom. In the other, she is posing at a dance team event, not cheerleading, an activity that the alleged victim was involved in during high school.

Sienna LaRene, a lawyer hired by the family Wednesday, said she has been sending letters warning Web sites to stop using the photographs. No decision has been made about whether the family will file lawsuits.

LaRene said she was still investigating who first posted the photograph, starting a chain reaction of misinformation.

"Every time they push that button, they've taken a smile away from a young girl's face, and heaven help them for that," LaRene said

  5. Officials: Bryant Accuser Was Hospitalized

    By STEVE WILSTEIN

EAGLE, Colo. - The scrutiny of Kobe Bryant's accuser intensified Thursday when authorities confirmed she was hospitalized as a "danger to herself" four months before the alleged sexual assault.

University of Northern Colorado police chief Terry Urista said campus police received a call about 9 p.m. on Feb. 25 regarding the woman in a dormitory room.

"An officer determined she was a danger to herself," he said. "It's classified as a mental health issue."

The woman was transported by ambulance to North Colorado Medical Center of Greeley.

"That was the only contact we've had with her all year long," Urista said.

Lindsey McKinney, a former friend who lived with the woman for two months last spring, said the woman attempted suicide last winter and again in May by overdosing on sleeping pills after returning home from school.

Authorities have not confirmed that Bryant's accuser attempted suicide or that she overdosed on pills in May.

Prosecutors and an attorney for Bryant's 19-year-old accuser have declined to discuss details of the case or the background of the woman.

The Eagle County sheriff dismissed speculation by at least one of the woman's friends that she is having second thoughts about going forward with the case.

"As far as I've heard, that is just plain rumor," Sheriff Joe Hoy said. "That is just off-board."

Bryant was charged with felony sexual assault after his accuser told authorities he attacked her at an Edwards resort June 30. Bryant has claimed the sex was consensual.

Prosecutors met with the woman at length at her lawyer's office this week and interviewed other young women at the district attorney's office in Eagle. Friends say the woman is strong enough to withstand the media attention.

Krista Flannigan, a spokeswoman for District Attorney Mark Hurlbert, said the final decision about pursuing the case rests with prosecutors, who represent the public and not just the victim.

"It's not her complaint against him. It's the people of Colorado against him," she said.

Prosecutors have sometimes decided to continue cases, including sexual assault and domestic violence ones, without the cooperation of victims, she said.

Hoy, who was accused by defense attorneys of rushing the case against Hurlbert's wishes, also said it was up to the prosecutor whether to go to trial.

"It wouldn't be her choice," Hoy said.

The woman's name has been on the radio in at least 60 cities and posted on various Internet sites, complete with address, phone number and, in several cases, photographs of the wrong women.

Media focus on her is angering some who say the spotlight is making her a victim all over again.

The release of her name is an invasion of her privacy, said Flannigan, who is also a victim advocate with experience in several high-profile cases.

"All assault victims' names are supposed to be protected," she said. "It's a safety and security issue, especially with higher profile cases. Once they are exposed, they really feel it's another violation. The victim is revictimized."

  6. This will get ugly. I've seen one story already that paints her in an extremely unflattering light. I didn't post it because I'm not sure it is credible.

  7. More unflattering than at least two suicide-related hospitalizations and apparently at least three suicide-related episodes in the last six months?

  8. I was listening to Hannity on the way home last week and some guy called in adn is claiming that Vail authorities are in a big negotiating session with eagle authorities to squash TWO previous sexual assault claims by the same girl...apparently, this is not the first time she has made these claims....still have not seen it verified or not nut the guy was saying it's public record...if this is true the case is over
