  4. But it's not that simple. Just because the police say something, that doesn't make it the law. I'm not defending the father. His judgment was obviously abysmal. But he is entitled to due process.

    I'm not sure why this is so confusing. The man's son was forbidden - ie, it was against the law for him to own his firearms. The police took them away to follow the law. The dad pleaded to keep the guns, saying he would keep ownership of them. The police relented, as the dad was legally allowed to own the firearms. The dad then gave them back to the son without consulting the police, transferring possession of multiple firearms to someone who the law prohibited possession of firearms to. The dad broke the law - knowingly.

    And just because the police say you cannot own firearms does, in fact make it so you can't own firearms. They classify you as mentally incompetent, or someone who has a history of domestic violence, etc, they go to a judge and the judge gives them the ability to deny firearms to an individual. That's what they did, and that's how it works.
