I believe by calculation I am getting adequate protein if you look at 1.6 - 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. If I sacrifice some LBM it is expected but I have more LBM than most people have total weight ha ha so will do my best to preserve but if not I can work on getting it back. Again I will not try to convince anyone but want to share to have open discussion so appreciate the inputs. But if you want advice I definitely will convince you of: Cut Out Sugars! Glucose and its damage to mitochondria funcion has been medically (not in research studies but medical review) linked to tumor growth rates, Alzheimer's (now being called in some circles Type III Diabetes), Parkinson's, worsening of seizures with those suffering from epilepsy, dementia, and of course Type II Diabetes. One study puts average American consumption at 20 teaspoons a day!
There's a lot of misconceptions in many posts I'm reading here so let me clear something up. This notion that a 1,200 calorie diet is somehow unhealthy is absurd. In fact, it's been demonstrated over and over again that the #1 anti-aging tactic a person can employ is restrictive eating. I'm not talking about maintenance calorie eating. I'm talking about restricting calories by either not eating at all (fasting) 5 days per month, or with a low daily calorie intake. If a person really wants to lose a ton of weight, all they have to do is stop eating. "But wait for just a second Baron! Nobody can do that because they will lose too much muscle! ...Or their thyroid will stop working!... Or their hormones will be wrecked!" That's just a bunch of B.S. Your body follows the laws of thermodynamics just like everything else in the universe. If you drastically limit or even stop your caloric intake altogether, you will lose fat. This was even demonstrated back in the 60's when a super fat man weighing 465 lbs fasted for a year and 17 days. You heard me... he didn't eat anything for over a year. The result: he lost 275lbs. And the only thing he ingested daily was a multivitamin and some potassium for heart health. The body isn't stupid. It's built to survive. If you stop eating, you're going to start burning body fat pretty fast and your body knows exactly how to function using your internal fat for fuel. There may be a transition period in which you feel like complete crap, but eventually, your body will adapt to that style of living and you will be completely fine as long as you have stored fat to burn.
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ Check out this BMR calculator. I'm a similar weight to you. My BMR is right around 2250 calories per day. But that's how many calories I expend if I don't get out of bed. On a sedentary day I increase that number by 20% and on an active day I increase that number by 35-50%. I rarely diet below 2000 calories per day because I know if I do I'll start catabolizing muscle and put stress on my organs. I'm sure if your doctor signed off on it you'll be okay. But I just don't want you to end up regretting cutting at too drastic a rate. Good luck to you sir!
More so than a doctor I have to be vigilent myself. How I feel, my energy levels, hydration, pains, bloating etc. I am monitoring everything I can.
243lbs=110kg*1.6=176g protein*4=704cals 50g carbs*4=200cals 1200-904=296cals/9=30g of fat IMO consuming 30g of fat at your size is gonna wreck havoc on hormones. How are your T levels? I would recommend you do a full hormonal workup before and after. If someone held a gun to my head and forced me into this diet i'd double or triple the fat and cut protein.
The ketogenic diet macro breakdown should be as follows; 65-75% of calories should be fat. 20-30% of calories should be protein. 5% should be carbohydrates. You have to have a ton of fat on the keto diet because that's where the ketones come from that your body burns for energy. If you eat too much protein, your body will convert it to glucose. If the OP is eating over 50% of his calories in protein, he probably isn't even in ketosis.
While I personally do a lot of IF to induce autophagy i wouldn't go as far as to call CR a proven fact with re: longevity. Human data just isn't there yet. i much rather employ a calculated balance and moderation strategy vs pushing extremes.
The point of the diet is to lose fat, not maintain sex hormones at optimal levels. If he has 58 lbs of fat to lose, he's already had plenty of days in the past that he ate like a king and was full and happy. Those days are over for a while, so any hormonal impact from caloric restriction is just a byproduct of having to dig deep and "go without" for a period. The bottom line is that depriving yourself of calories isn't very fun and you're pretty much going to feel like crap throughout the journey at various times, and your sex hormones will reflect that.
I agree. 1000's of Holocaust victims that were truly starved for years lived well into their 90's, some even more. Ditto American POW's in Japan. I don't think a 1200 calorie/day is gonna hurt anyone. Thats ridiculous. Americans eat too damn much. Look around.
