Kazakh drought signals alarm for grain crop

YESIL-AGRO FARM, Kazakhstan, July 17 (Reuters) - Kazakhstan
is preparing for a below-average grain crop this year due to
an "alarming" drought in the Central Asian country's main graingrowingregions,
Deputy Agriculture Minister Muslim Umiryayevsaid on Tuesday.

While reiterating the ministry's latest 2012 crop forecast of 14 million tonnes,
a decline of 48 percent on last year's post-Soviet record,
Umiryayev said hot and dry weather conditions in northern regions were giving cause for concern.

    "The situation is alarming,"
he told reporters at the Yesil-Agro farm north of the Kazakh capital Astana.
"Our main graingrowing regions will not have the record crop of last year."

Kazakhstan, one of the world's ten-largest wheat exporters,
harvested 27 million tonnes of grain last year,
its biggest crop in 20 years of independence from the Soviet Union.
