I think Forbes networth is not very accurate. Private assets is estimated, unless you are a show off narcissist who cares about raking (like trump), where you update Forbes on your riches even if unsolicited.

    Well, this changes the math...

I thought he got much more. He owned 30% of broadcast.com at the IPO, so he should have got 1/3rd of the sales price, and not necessary the whole sales was for stocks. (I am still researching the details.) The other guy getting a big chunk was Todd Warner, Mark's business partner since then. I am not sure where the rest of the 5.7 B went...The founder's (Jaeb) shares were diluted to 1%, I guess a la Facebook.

Lots of employees got shares too, making them paper millionaires, but still, there is a good 2.5B unaccounted for from the sales price.

I am guessing his net worth after the sale was at least 2 B, so that means he more than doubled it in 2 decades. His best play was the Mavericks so far resulting in a 10 times return.

There are investors, and there are people you invest in. Mark Cuban, Elon Musk, etc - may be people that can change the world and therefore worth investing in, not being so useless that all they can do is to look for someone else who can actually do something useful, to invest in.
Cuban may not be as concerned with being the richest, but using money as a tool to change the world, or at least work with people and projects he believes in. It’s a purpose other than hoarding money that you can’t spend when you die anyway. It’s mainly the greedy bastards that are so concerned with counting other people’s money.

Cuban bought the Mavericks in 2000 for a fraction of what its worth now. A mega fraction.
