John McCain has died

  1. The word hero is thrown around so loosely these days it's difficult to know who is deserving and who isn't. I have no opinion on the "hero status" of John McCain. Perhaps he was, perhaps he was not.
My only question and concern regarding the past year(s) of his life is how can a person of such age and poor health be allowed to remain in office when it's painfully obvious that person is unable to preform the most basic element of that job? That is to just show up for work. There should be something in place to remove people from office when it's obvious they cannot preform the functions of that office.
We Americans don't expect much of our politicians, but we do expect them to at least show up.
The people of AZ. were without representation and that's a problem.
Bottom line, he should have resigned his position a year ago, some would argue more than that. An actual patriot who cared more for country than personal status would have done that. Of that, there can be no debate.

To be fair I don't think John McCain would self-describe himself as a hero.

However he also wouldn't accept abuse from those who did not serve denigrating his military service or time as a POW. These type of comments were not only personally insulting to McCain but to others who have been POWs or have served honorable in the U.S. military during conflicts.

While not serving myself. I have many relatives who have been in the military.
None of them believe in giving people free passes. I won't ever accept the idea we can't question a man's story in search of the truth because someone claims a status.

So, what do you think of McCain Songbird tape?

So like many other POWs they tortured McCain for days and forced him to make a tape. Shall we denigrate all the other U.S. POWs who did the same thing.

"Senator McCain has spoken candidly for years, in media interviews and his own memoir, of making a false confession tape after being tortured as a POW in North Vietnam. Although his 'confession' was coerced by days of extreme physical abuse, he always regretted it."

Does that make them hero's? We should should just be saying he served and was shot down. There are others who were POW's who did not break. That is where we may locate hero's.

I have an uncle who was shot down as a helicopter pilot and another who flew jets in Viet Nam.
They had tough times too. Particularly the helicopter pilot.

Did John McCain ever say he was a hero? He only said he served, was shot down, and captured. McCain said he regretted making the tape (read the entire article for more context). McCain was probably the last person who would personally claim to be a hero.

  10. I cannot, and will not judge John McCain on what he did while a POW. What he did as a politician is another story, and it will be made difficult to separate the two because of the political gamesmanship being played.
I watched a documentary many years ago which had several POW's from different wars and they were all pretty much on the same page regarding torture. If they want to break you, they will break you. The only reason they don't break everyone is to cause distrust and dissention among other prisoners.
No man, no man at all who has not been in such a position can say what they would do, therefore no person should pass judgment on him for his time as a POW.
