JMA vs. HMA

Discussion in 'Technical Analysis' started by tenthousandmen, Jan 31, 2012.

  1. There's been allot of discussion about which is better... looking at some JMA code on the internet, it looks like the JMA is just a modified HMA. Am I incorrect?

If you use either, what are your feelings?

I don't know the formula for the JMA but I'd bet it's more complicated than a modified HMA. For one thing, it's been around longer than the HMA IIRC.

I personally would never use an overshooter as my smoother. Just my two cents.

When are jurik research going to support windows 7? Windows 8 will be out by summer!

  4. Got it... what do you use?

IMO, JMA and HMA appear similar on live charts... the example chart shown isn't necessarily realistic... :D

I use my own custom ama. I don't know how it compares to the JMA but I like it. However I found out that simply having a great smoother isn't enough for a great trading system. :(

Granted, the pic you posted isn't totally realistic but it does point out that the HMA can overshoot, which should be taken as a warning of what can happen in a real trading situation.
