  2. Blaming the military for failure to rescue the hostages in Tehran is lame even for kool aid drinkers. That mission had a very low chance of success. If it had gone forward, it is very likely they either would have all been killed, the hostages would have been killed, large numbers of Iranian "civilians" would have been killed or we would have had another Bay of Pigs debacle where Carter would have flinched when they needed air cover to extract and left them to be tortured and killed.

I doubt Delta Force was very enthusiastic about this plan. It's one thing to storm a plane on a runway at an airport you control. To go into the middle of Tehran, mount a firefight against entrenched defenders with superior numbers, then extract with a large number of civilians, well, let's just say I don't even recall that happening in the movies.

It was reported at the time that Carter's advisors were terrified about the possibility of civilian casualties. Cyrus Vance wanted to know why the Delta Force guys couldn't just shoot to wing the Republican Guards. Rather than send Delta Force on a suicide mission designed to rescue Carter's presidency, a more appropriate response would have been to give the ayotollah khomeini a date certain for their release, failing which we would declare war and proceed to level much of Tehran.

Carter's defenders will say that none of the hostages died. That is true, but a lot of other people have over the years by virtue of the Iranian government.

  3. Have you noticed that you never hear former Repubs bad mouth the current administration? When GW was invading Iraq the first time and then flip flopped on his no tax pledge...Reagan was silent. When Clinton was having white water and Monica and got impeached...GWI and Reagan both were silent...But Jimmy boy and Bubba can't help but come out and blast other administrations.....Carter even went off during Clinton's years when he interfered with a pending military action in Haiti....Did you ever hear Ford bash the reagan camp publicly? Or clinton??

It's a very old trick that you can make money selling your country to her enemies. Clearly, many people around the world love to hear how bad we are, especially from a former US President. Jealousy is an extremely powerful emotion, and many Europeans feel great pain from our economic and socio-political success. That brings a lot of attention and visibility to Carter and he loves it - not to mention the money from speaking engagements, that phony Nobel prize, etc. Imo, whether GWB is a good President or not is not the point here, but the many disgusting ways that Carter has found to make a fortune from selling out to our enemies is. He has betrayed his office and his countrymen, and he keeps on doing it with impunity. Compared to him, again imo, GWB is truly fantastic and keeps getting better :)

  6. Here's a chart:

    http://icasualties.org/oif/IED.aspx

Looks to me like 2 men are killed in vehicles by bombs for every 1 killed in gunbattles.

Certainly parsing the stories everyday it seems like AT LEAST 1 blown up in his vehicle for every 1 killed engaging the enemy.

Dying on the way to the front (wherever that is) is a viable strategy?
