1. have you considered the fact if most other people disagree with you it may be you that is missing something?

"Obama cult zombies are brainwashed and blinded by greed.."
obamas popularity is across too wide of the population spectrum for this to be possible.

2. +1

But leave it to the "neo-cons" and George Bush Lovers that inhabit this Forum to actually claim that the GOP has solutions to all of the problems that this country is currently facing . . .

Think the GOP has a solution to fix health care in this country? Was there ever an Energy policy under Bush during his 8 years?

Think again.

But leave it to the "AAA's" and "Gnomes" of ET to believe otherwise . . . so much denial, so much bitterness, so little time.

If those guys actually trade for a living, I'd be shocked. Their "mind-set" is that of paranoia and epic failure . . . nothing more, nothing less.

3. Sample tax calculation for someone living in Ontario making $70,000 in 2008:

Federal taxes
15% x $38,832 = $5,825
22% x $31,168 = $8,543

Ontario taxes
6.05% x $36,848 = $2,229
9.15% x $33,152 = $3,033

Total taxes paid = $19,630
Effective Tax Rate = $19,630/$70,000 = 28%

GST is paid at the consumer level and is 5% of purchases of the non-essential nature (doesn't include groceries etc.). Most people qualify for a quarterly GST credit which knocks this down.

Generally speaking, ~28% is a good estimate in Ontario for that income level. I'm not sure how this compares to some of you in the USA right now, but it's far from 42%.

dewton

We talk about taxes and such and how they suck, how they're necessary, how they equal socialism, etc. but no one talks about the enormous interest payment on total debt paid to private bankers each year, which far surpasses any sort of tax!! if we get rid of these payments, we don't need taxes at all! is anyone listening?

7. Exactly.

It's also amusing to see that all of these so-called "free-market" GOP types on these boards don't seem to have a problem with the FACT that people's health-care premiums have been going up +5.5% per year while the employee contribution demanded by Corporate America on the employee has surged by +12% per year*.

For them, everything was just "peachy" under GW Bush. :D

8. Dude, those are COMBINED federal and provincial tax rates in your link...do the calculation with the rates you just posted in your link and you will see that it comes out to the same amount.

A common misconception when people are looking at tax rates is to assume someone's entire income is taxed at the rate at which their income falls under, but in reality different portions of your income are taxed at different rates.

It is indeed a myth that Canadians pay exorbant amounts of taxes to pay for healthcare.
