A friend sent this this, I'm not sure when "last week was". Plantation, FL -- Last week police were called to investigate an attempted armed robbery: The 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a Plantation, FL, Subway shop late Wednesday, killing one and critically wounding the other, is described as John Lovell, a former helicopter pilot for two presidents. He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, and he works out everyday. Mr. Lovell was a man of action Wednesday night. According to Plantation police, two masked gunmen came into the Subway at 1949 N.. Pine Rd. Just after 11 p.m. There was a lone diner, Mr. Lovell, who was finishing his meal.. After robbing the cashier, the two men attempted to shove Mr. Lovell into a bathroom and rob him as well. They got his money, but then Mr. Lovell pulled his handgun and opened fire. He shot one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other in the head. When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop, K-9 units found the other in the bushes of a nearby business.. They also found cash strewn around the front of the sandwich shop according to Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department. Both men were taken to the Broward General Medical Center , where one, Donicio Arrindell, 22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale is in critical but stable condition A longtime friend of Lovell was not surprised to hear what happened. The friend said, ''He'd give you the shirt off his back, but he'd be mad as hell if someone tried to take the shirt off your back.'' Mr. Lovell was a pilot in the Marine Corps, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. He is not expected to be charged authorities said. ''He was in fear for his life,'' Detective Rettig said, "These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70's have military backgrounds and aren't intimidated by idiots."
A dog is a great warning and will deter some criminals but not all. I recently had an experience where my dog alerted me to an intruder outside my back door. What deterred the person was the slide action on my Remington 870. I used to live in a high crime area and still have to drive through them sometimes. I have no fear of getting car jacked. Why, because if some dumb mofo wants to endanger me and steal my car they will need to face the business end of an HK. This may sound extreme to the left leaning crowd on here but I refuse to be a victim. The well being of me, my family, my friends, and our property is more important than the health of some jackass criminal wanting to take them. And with respect to the 2nd amendment, a healthy does of fear from the populace is a good thing. Otherwise a government stops serving the people and begins oppressing them.
Mr. Lovell is clearly a right-wing Klan member who should have known better and not violated the criminals' civil rights by shooting them. All he had to do was sit there and let them rob him, beat him up, and possibly murder him. Lovell should have sympathized with their circumstances, be it drug abuse, poverty, no father figure, lack of education, or whatever. Who the hell does he think he is? If he was that worried about his personal protection, he should have a trained Rottweiler by his side at all times, not a firearm which he may use impulsively and irresponsibly. I hope the surviving young man sues Mr Lovell for the irreparable trauma he has caused.
I stand corrected. I also enjoyed your earlier reference to Floyd. Listened to that just last weekend.
One thing some of you guys are missing is the fact that the right to own/bear guns is an individual right. That right has been affirmed by the SC. Even you choose not to own a gun, you should support that right since it is an individual right. I may disagree with the courts interpretation of "privacy" vis a vis abortion, but that too is an individual right. You can't pick and choose just the rights you agree with. If someone can infringe my right to own a gun, simply because they disagree with it, does that mean I can infringe on a womans' right to an abortion?
Here's a way to deal with rapists: Mother sets fire to her daughter's gloating rapist By Peter Upton in Alicante Last Updated: 11:48PM BST 25 Jun 2005 A Spanish mother has taken revenge on the man who raped her 13-year-old daughter at knifepoint by dousing him in petrol and setting him alight. He died of his injuries in hospital on Friday. Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano, 69, had been sent to jail for nine years in 1998, but was let out on a three-day pass and returned to his home town of Benejúzar, 30 miles south of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca. While there, he passed his victim's mother in the street and allegedly taunted her about the attack. He is said to have called out "How's your daughter?", before heading into a crowded bar. Shortly after, the woman walked into the bar, poured a bottle of petrol over Soriano and lit a match. She watched as the flames engulfed him, before walking out. The woman fled to Alicante, where she was arrested the same evening. When she appeared in court the next day in the town of Orihuela, she was cheered and clapped by a crowd, who shouted "Bravo!" and "Well done!" A judge ordered her to be held in prison and undergo psychiatric tests, provoking anger from friends and neighbours, who have set up a petition calling for her release. Soriano suffered 60 per cent burns in the attack on June 13 and was airlifted to a specialist unit. He survived for 11 days before succumbing to his injuries. It is understood that the woman, who cannot be named because of laws safeguarding the identity of rape victims, claims to have no recollection of the attack which took place in the Bar Mary, just 300 yards from the family home. As decorators painted over the blackened walls of his bar last week, Antonio Ferrendez Lopez told how Soriano had walked in at lunchtime. "The place was packed with people eating. I was sitting at a table and Soriano was standing at the bar very close to me when the woman walked in," he said. "She didn't acknowledge anyone but walked up to Soriano, who was drinking a coffee, put her hand on his shoulder and turned him round to face her. "Then she pulled the bottle she was carrying from under her arm and began to tip it over him. At first I didn't realise what was happening, but then I smelt the petrol. I jumped up and tried to grab her, but when she struck a match I got clear. "The petrol was in a pool around Soriano, and she threw the match into it. It ignited with a whoosh, and he screamed and staggered about covered in flames. As people rushed outside to escape the flames, she just looked at him, then turned and walked away." Customers helped Mr Lopez put out the fire with extinguishers and doused Soriano with water until paramedics arrived. Soriano's attack on the woman's teenage daughter took place in 1998. The girl was going to buy a loaf of bread when Soriano snatched her from the street, threatened her with a knife and raped her.
Well, you are sitting in your home one day and notice your car outside is burning (if you have a garage, your house may be burning because of a molotov cocktail thrown by a gang member) If you dare step outside you may be shot in a drive by shooting or may see nothing at all. When you drive you may be escorted out of your car at gun point by several gang members to be shot execution style. When you go to your local bank (or even walgreens) you see several gunmen walk in and if you try to be a hero you will be shot. All of those examples are far from unrealistic. Quite the opposite, this is what happens when police force is insufficient to deter GANG ACTIVITY and John Wayne wannabes can't fill the void. (they never can no matter what they think) By trying to protect that mythical 110 lbs woman you set in motion the chain of events which endangers the existence of law and order itself. Because guns are available as easily as cigarette packs in some areas, if the police force ever dips below a certain threshold you will see hell on earth. And idiot vigilantes will not be able to do anything about it. NYC was able to combat the crime wave it had by having an effective and mean police force and active prosecution of criminals(as well as strict gun laws). It is one of the most diverse cities in the US. Everything is "going according to plan" in Orlando. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/custom/data/orl-homicidemap-main,0,4865031.htmlpage (latest) http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news...dec19,0,2369860.story?coll=orl-home-headlines (ominous article from 2006) http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/68102/orlando_hits_record_for_murder_rate.html (another one from 2006) Orlando's police force can't cover areas such as "Pine Hills" and "Orange Blossom Trail" effectively. And oddly enough, vigilantes can't fill the void. Also pay attention to "youths with guns" an anomaly which can only occur in a casual gun culture such as US. Kiddies with guns, gangs and other trash is a natural consequence of looking after that mythical 110lbs woman. As living standards will continue to deteriorate, this will only get worse. P.S Btw, guns in private hands offer no protection from US government as Iraq war amply illustrated.
