Unfortunately, when this is all over, we will still have the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Hezbolla’s playground in South Lebanon, and the “plight of the Palestinian people.”

To eliminate this problem is to remove these stateless territories utterly, either by incorporating them as part of Israel, under one government and rule of law, or by compelling Egypt, Syria, and Jordan to take them in under their responsibility and rule of law.

I don't see any edge for Israel in a conventional army standoff with Hizbolah. Why they couldn't just snatch few Hizbolah operatives?
This should be a war of special forces and intelligent services. This is a war of brains not muscules. Although I also believe that the continuing border skirmishes anyway would have lead to an escalation at some point. Therefore this military campaign should have rather the following political goal: not neccesarily attemt to disarm Hizbolah but to exact from Hizbola ( and Lebanon ) very high price to pay for any further abductions.

  5. Hiya acronym: No, my views on oil have nothing to do with my recent trip to Israel. The only constructive business idea to come to me while out there; is that someone needs to open the first drive through fast food place near the Tel-Aviv boardwalk. Whoever tries this first will rake in some serious shekels.

  7. Part of the mission of this military campaign is to get a hold of the long range rockets that can reach the middle of Israel. Concerns about those specific rockets (Made in Iran) with devastating range are such that the Israeli government is willing to take the chance that their attack might cause some of the long range rockets to be launched, which on the other hand would increase the chance to find out where they are located and deal once and for all with what they consider to be a major threat.

  8. I'm not quite sure what you are saying here. The battle is actually with Hezbollah in this case. They may say they can't disarm, but isn't that what Israel can solve for them? If Israel takes Hezbollah out, which I hope is what this battle (if not already) is all about, then the problems with that country will improve a great deal.
