  1. Could you give us the definition of gambling?

Without the definition, the poll isn't very meaningful.

I voted that it is gambling.

I don't think it matters. What say you?

  3. I think the flaw here is the perception of gambling. People think that if you don't have an edge your gambling. On the other side people think if they have an edge you are not gambling.

The truth is whether you have an edge or not you are gambling.

Where there's risk of an unknown outcome you are gambling.

The difference is when you start earning capital you are gambling with the houses money. My personal favorite way of gambling.

  4. OK, Mr. Super Trader,

i am back on ET, and i must tell you how wrong you are.

What is gambling ??? Its always a game about percentage and luck....
    LUCK, LUCK, LUCK.....................

In proffessionall trading, like myself, there is no LUCK, there are just statistical percentages and thats all....

The rare happening of 9/11, tsunami, central bank intervention, aliens attack or what ever, are still in counted in the statistics.

Worst case i lose my risk.
But in reality this never happens, i am out on the half of it.
Not in 1 of 10 times, but in 1 of 50 times.

I read the markets like a book, there is no challenge there in correct predicting.

The only challenge is in how to manage positions in the different short and long term setup to get the most out of the week, of the possible money making situations.

Do you know, how bad it feels, if you switched to a trade, you thouht it would to better, and you see the other trade made instead 500pips in the FX in one week, while you are stuck with 2 x 100pips......

Time managment into relation to setup management is the only challenge i have.

In other words, i only fight in the game, to predict which of my setups, will move when and first and when ever exactly every day, to be precise to manage my positions. I go in and out of longer time trades all the time, just to have free margin for shorter time trades, and i am right all the time.

If i would be wrong i would kill myself, so, i am still alive.
Realize to whom you are talking here.........

    Gambling my ass..........

    :p :p :p

  5. Can one predict winning or losing?

If trading is "not gambling" does that mean the trader really knows?

    hi guys,
i am new to the forum and it is my first post.

as far as my experience shows - trading is definitely "not gambling".
i think mr. charlie wright has rightly said it in his very informative book "trading as a business".

may be , its more to do with the mindset of the person trading- how he is doing it.

  10. The reason why this thread is so large and has lasted so long is because traders have strong feelings about this subject...We used to get many fragmented threads on this subject until this thread became the master thread. This is the largest, longest standing thread on the subject on the internet at the time of this posting. Below are a few recent quotes from traders who believe the opposite from one another. Some writing styles are more direct than others. Traders when posting in "ShopTalk" can appear to be rude, when in fact they are the nicest people you could meet. But overall this thread serves its purpose. Have you voted?

Here are the stats at the time of this post.
    Code:
    Gambling 426 34.63%
    Not Gambling 804 65.37%
