Some OP's such as fortydraws want the ability to block others from their threads and without that they won't post. As you've seen it's not possible to compel someone to continue posting.
Try to imagine multiple levels of trolling beyond your own experiences. Picture a martial arts instructor. In the thread Fractal Theory I ...the paradigm being explored requires active participation for reasons I can't grasp but basically the repetition of doing exercises builds something similar to muscle memory or otherwise enables discoveries one needs to progress thru levels which can't be attained via explanation alone. This could be a gimmic or cover for a scam but imo that's obviously incorrect. Tho it might be a deviously devised test it's clear the method simply requires hands on experience doing exercises to continue progressing. Within that environment students are helped along when they're making a sincere effort even if they're not making progress. While others who might know more are ignorerd if they're only trolling for greater knowledge and it appears what they've garnered thus far is only what's been taught and they don't have what they would have if they had done 'any' of the work themselves. { In my lifetime I have observed instructional texts which intentionally included false info which then appeared on an exam to cull those who were faking it by memorizing the text book. Those who did everything they were assigned were the only ones who could get that question right. The salient point is subtleties within that single question were able to distinguish a very important difference. } You can't compel people to do something. Even if you could what you would get wouldn't be near worth what someone like LLIHeroic creates when posting about a subject that inspires him.
If everyone including myself would think of this before replying it would drastically reduce the noise and increase the quality. Even if others don't reply the trolls posts still disrupt the thread.
A friend was sitting on the freeway in stop and go traffic. Five cars behind them and all stopped dead still. Car hit the fifth one back going 85 mph. Could happen to any of us. The effects of the concussion and back pain have lingered across the years. In one of these conversations someone implied that those who wanted control of their own thread to be prissy... like people who drink tea with their little finger extended. That is one issue, but there are also people who find trolls unacceptable because... well... life has chewed on them and as a result they are just intolerant of such: trolls are a form of bullying directly or though just wasting time (once life has chewed on you, time becomes more precious). For some it may be an issue of devil-take-the-hindmost. You might say that if you are infirm, or old, or disabled to some degree you shouldn't trade, or talk on the forum if you do. But for some trading and talking on a forum may be one of the few things they can do. The playing field in life is not level. Things can be set up to let the bullies mess with them or not: devil-take-the-hindmost. So how much are you willing to modify/limit the behavior of those who are ornery (yet healthy) to accommodate those who are no longer so innocent? Make so the ornery can not post on a thread? There is no easy answer, and this aspect is just one small part of the overall picture. Barron, to all appearances, is healthy and young enough that this forum reflects an assumption you can take care of yourself. Perhaps that is as it should be. He has done a great job overall.
