Is margin much higher than Reg T availabel? How?

Discussion in 'Order Execution' started by sectrader, Jan 7, 2007.

  1. I was offered margin 6:1 or even 8:1. Till now I've had only Reg T margin 2:1. I've heard about portfolio margin which is coming or already available but I thought that it's not much above current Reg T. Have you heard about brokers offering substantially higher than Reg T margin? Can you name this brokers or how to find them or ask about this higher margin? What is even the name for it and how it is getting around Reg T?
I trade securities from national exchanges (mostly NYSE).
Repo, I think, is not for me ,since repo is dealing mostly with Treasuries, as I understand.
    Thank you very much.

There are lots of professional/proprietary trading firms, much discussed on this site, that offer very high intraday and overnight margin. They are able to do this because they are essentially structured as a private partnership and not regulated like a retail account. Being a private group though, your funds with them are not sipc insured.

  3. You can get at least 4 to 1 margin with greater than 25K at any broker.

  4. I need more than 2:1 for overnight positions. And it is limited at all brokers by Regulation T.
