I was always told that if the spread is 50.50 - 50.55 and .54 trade te specialist is getting short or if 50.51 trades the specialist is getting long. Is this always the case or should I only be paying attention to the times he spreads wide?

  8. No way to really tell, and it doesn't really matter anyway. Specialsts prefer to just match orders and get paid for doing so (these days anyway). They will long and short several times every day for the most part.
