Have you ever wondered about the difference between psuedo intellectual people and true intellectuals. 1. Many pseudo intellectuals are just not bright enough to be real intellectuals. You do not have that problem. but... 2. Educated, bright people who are true intellectuals are very aware of their own potential failings and/or limitations. These interesting people almost never put down others religious beliefs. Whereas, many weaker academics and wannabes love to throw around snide comments thinking it makes them look witty. Now that I pointed this out to you, you may notice the pattern. The snide remarks almost always come out of the wannabes. Dawkins is a prime of example of an educated wannabe who plays to an audience of college level wannabes.
the purpose of the Bible is to assure the supremacy of the Israelites in Cannan. It also has some good pointers on how to hold a society together long term. But all through it are strange scientific facts that only today are being understood. And most those scientific facts are shared by religons all across the earth. the problem with atheists is, they want to feel really smart. And when some believer claims he has found peace, it makes them feel like second class citizens so they lash out like the pathetic little nerds they always were. I've been a believer and an atheist. Both of them were fun at first.
^"I've been a believer and an atheist. Both of them were fun at first." Very true. Having been both myself I can say it takes a monumental effort to stay "convinced" of anything when it comes to the mystery of creation.
Thankfully the human spirit exists outside of religious tales and beliefs and exists despite those Bible stories, which encourage people to war in the name of an imagined God. If the Bible were read and treated like a Grimm's tale, there would probably be fewer problems all round, possibly less conflict and one less reason for people not to get along.
But does it take a monumental effort for you to be convinced that not anything and everything, (you know, like a potato) can be responsible? Please Cap, reassure me you are being serious and don't say yes!
if the Bible were read and treated like a treasure trove of ancient history and knowledge instead of a fairy tale...... I've never seen a Bible (or a Koran for that matter) fire the first shot in a war If every word out of a bribed politican's mouth was treated like a Grimm's fairy tale.... ah, typical elitist, you think you know everything that is going through a man's mind when he reads the Bible
I have no friends, only enemies. I feel the same way about the Bible as I do about the Constitution. Written by men. They got the important things right but were wrong on some small issues. Although if you are 3/5ths of a citizen or homosexual it may not seem that small. We can ammend the constituition and have done so many times. Ammending the Bible is a different matter, due to the fact that it was written by God and is His Holy Word. Most of us by now have a friend or family member who goes that way. "Sorry kid, your fate was decided two thousand years ago by some guy named The Apostle Paul in some letter he wrote." The Bible Tells Me So.
You make my point. That's exactly the problem...Bible and Koran often are treated like treasure troves of knowledge . Wrong on small issues? You must be joking. Bible and Koran, both historically hostile to any free inquiry of them. Coercive and glorifying the indiscriminate killing of whole nations. Both disdainful towards women and children. Both demanding worship and glorification of their supposed authors who condone and sanction such obnoxious behavior. Both, in great hypocrisy, promoting peace and love too, so should anyone whose 'treasure trove of ancient history and knowledge' be educated by its nasty ways, there is also found in the same place, absolution, the 'knowledge' of being excused and forgiven of their transgressions for only the price of some gratuitous worshiping.
