"He's a traitor to the motherland"!

Guys, many of you Americans are starting to sound like you're lving in East Germany during the 1970s.

What next, do you want the secret police to arrest him on a trumped and charge and sent away for 're-education'?

The real problem here is the absurdity of having a capital gains tax at all (at least in its current form). It creates endless complications, all while disincentivizing efficient reinvestment. And on top of that, there's an issue of fairness - why should foreign residents pay 0% to the IRS, while Americans pay 39% on the same trade on a US company's stock?

I think the US would be much better off, long-term, moving to some sort of graduated consumption tax (if that were practical).

  3. So Saverin never wants to live in the US for more than 90 days? Once you renounce, you can't reapply. And I don't know whether you can gain permanent residency ie a green card, but it doesn't make sense to offer permanent residency to renouncers. And what if he marries a US citizen? Could you really renounce and then turn right around and marry a US citizen and get a green card? That doesn't make sense either.

So Saverin now cannot live in the US. Where is he going to live? Brazil? Singapore? Monaco? This sounds like something he will regret. Malibu is a nice play to live. So is Manhattan. Singapore is not so much fun. The marginal value of an extra $billion is low. The value of being able to live in the country you were raised, the most powerful country in the world, and WHERE YOUR FAMILY LIVES, is high. This is a stupid move he will come to regret.

Wow. Good thing the founding fathers here didn't think like this. Instead they chose to overthrow their oppressors and the unfair taxes and establish a new government. This type of thinking is straight out of the socialist playbook.

I don't think you will find anyone but liars willing to state that if they were in his shoes and had the option of coughing up 1 billion dollars or exiting, that they would choose the former.

The only people that "expect some payback" from this guy are free loaders. Nobody that actually produces something of value would have this view point. In fact I would argue that the real patriot is left with only 2 options. Armed insurrection with the goal of overthrowing the increasingly tyrannical Gov and FED. That or a total withdrawal of all productivity and assets and allow the system to collapse in on itself, preserving your wealth so that you can step back in and reinvest in the recovery and rebuilding.

I don't claim to know this guys motivations but there are a lot of people here that are fed up with having their productivity stolen to provide for an increasingly entitled lot of freeloaders. If this guy was in the upper tax brackets, which is probable, then he has already paid more than his fair share.

I know this is my first post but I occasionally lurk and finally couldn't resist opining on some of the lunacy in this thread.

  5. Unlikely that Saverin would move to Brazil, because he would need bodyguards wherever he went. His bios mention some sort of kidnapping plot. He would be very vulnerable to kidnapping anywhere in Latin America. So basically that restricts his possible domiciles to EU, Singapore, Canada. Does he really want to live in Singapore the rest of his life? EU taxes are even worse, and Monaco is tiny.

This sounds more like he renounced his family. His family probably lives in Miami - unless they moved back to Brazil, which sounds unlikely. Saverin basically made a huge mistake here. When he gets older he'll really want to move back to where he grew up and lived most of his life, and where his friends and family life.

  8. ET should really ban embedded videos. Just include a link, the videos are big visual obstructions. I don't need to see Elvis youtube videos.
