P.T. Barnum is credited for the time-honored phrase “There’s a sucker born every minute,” which neatly summed up how carnival barkers and con men can readily find marks so easy to exploit. But what if that sucker is a candidate for president?

That rhetorical question comes to mind after former President Donald Trump promoted a conspiracy about Kamala Harris’s crowd size making the rounds in far-right circles that is easily disproven by video evidence.

At issue is an image that emerged from a Harris-Walz rally held at the Detroit Metro airport. An image of Air Force Two has been shared by conspiracists, insisting that inconsistencies in a news photo reveal some sort of digital malfeasance — like AI or Photoshop — that shows that it is not real. Take, for example, this social media post from disgraced filmmaker and infamous conspiracist, Dinesh D’Souza:

Sunday morning, Trump took to social media and appeared to amplify that very allegation, claiming that Vice President“A.I.’d” it, meaning the massive rally in attendance at the Detroit Metro Airport. Trump wrote:

Has anyone noticed that Kamala CHEATED at the airport? There was nobody at the plane, and she “A.I.’d” it, and showed a massive “crowd” of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST! She was turned in by a maintenance worker at the airport when he noticed the fake crowd picture, but there was nobody there, later confirmed by the reflection of the mirror like finish on the Vice Presidential Plane. She’s a CHEATER. She had NOBODY waiting, and the “crowd” looked like 10,000 people! Same thing is happening with her fake “crowds” at her speeches. This is the way the Democrats win Elections, by CHEATING – And they’re even worse at the Ballot Box. She should be disqualified because the creation of a fake image is ELECTION INTERFERENCE. Anyone who does that will cheat at ANYTHING!

The thing is, the allegation that the large crowd in attendance can be easily proven in a 30-second Internet search that reveals video of the event, like this promoted by X account @Breaking911:

So on the very day that Axios reports that campaign advisors are pleading with Trump to avoid recidivist behavior and stay on a winning campaign message, Trump can’t help but appeal to his conspiracy-eager base of supporters.

Trump’s campaign advisors would be wise to take heed from one of Trump’s favorite campaign bits, “The Snake,” which concludes, “You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in.”
