    1) check your current ip address at http://www.whatismyip.com/

    2) unplug your cable from the wall for a few minutes. then plug it in again. you will automatically get a new ip address. make sure you're unplugging it from the wall. unplugging the connection to your router won't do anything.

    3) check your ip address again. if it's different, then you didn't stay unplugged long enough. retry. you shouldn't need to stay unplugged for more than 10 minutes.

Edit: For #3, I meant to say

"if it's the same, then you didn't stay unplugged long enough."

sometimes even this isn't enough to get a new ip address. we've had the same address with comcast cable internet for close to 2 years now.

    again: there are 2 poss:
    a) fix IP
    b) variable IP

    a) your IP will be the same a lifetime
    b) your IP changes everytime yourequest a new one

check what your ISP gives you ...

  10. Same here. IP addresses assigned by comcast are effectively fixed even though technically they're DHCP.

You can prolly call their tech support line and get them to change it. Not sure why you'd want to, though.
