    Oh you're no fun :D

Actually, the orginal training environment you described is becoming more and more prevalent, because MMA is destroying the idea of pure styles.

My school is a great example. One night I might be doing gun disarms. Then groundfighting. The throws. I have instructors skilled and ranked in several arts, they mix and match arts/techniques as they see fit, and we're encouraged to do the same.

  2. Yeah, that sounds pretty cool-i did zen do kai, sort of a precursor to ufc/mma becoming popular, it was mixed up, different, varied training, bits and pieces from various other arts.

Im sure the guy who "invented" it, bob jones, claims credit for bringing mma to australia etc-i think their now running grappling classes/bjj/mma proper under the same umbrella group.

But thats like me, describing my homemade variation on a throw some guy was showing me, when he said"oh, that throw is actually a hapkido move" and i thought
    "cool, i just invented hapkido:D "

Zen do kai was an odd thing, i dont know who makes up these rules, but (at the time, and i never got that far) you had to do a compulsory stint as a bouncer to get the first (or second?) black belt, the idea was you had to be able to use it, practical wise etc.

Sounds good in theory, except idiotic drunken thugs would target these guys, its amazing how many retarded egotistical @#*wits would start a brawl or a fight just so they could boast that they "beat up" a black belt.

Likewise, when they fixed the problem by working in teams, and unnofficially (and officially ) hiring out security etc, they ended up getting a reputation as a bunch of thugs in some areas!

Oh well. Overall, it was ok, but one time i went to -i think it was shoto-kan or something like that, it was the only club in the area. Rigid, traditional stuff, deep stance, low gaurd, and omfg, no WAY was i doing that.

Every class was identical-id hate to fight one of those guys, 'coz if they didnt kick me across the room, they'd quickly bore me to death:p

That's interesting about the bouncer thing, never heard of anything like that before.

Funny, I join an investment forum to talk learn about investing, but I just end up talking about martial arts anyway :D

    On an unrelated note-
At the other forums I visit, there's always a handful of really smart/helpful vets. Who would they be here? You have a massive post count, are you one?

  4. Yeah, sort of an odd thing to do with the bouncing, particularly given it was up to management whether they were paid or not-you had to do it, so a lot of it was volunteer!! Screw that:D
I think they canned the concept eventually, too many potential legal hassles.

    Vets-military Veterans, or vetinary surgeons?

Oh, wait-you could be talking about trading. Ummm.....i dont know, it depends what your looking for, people do tend to specialise in certain products & techniques.
