Hello, I am a sophomore in college, and I trade my own money. I hope one day to be trading on my own. I was thinking a good way to start would be to get a summer job or internship at a trading desk or with a hedge fund in New York. Does anyone have any advice on this?

Tell them what you want to do. Ask how you might get a job as an intern in a trading office. The job descriptions and qualifications might give you ideas about what to study.
Major in physics or math. Otherwise you don't have a chance. Whatever you do don't tell anyone you trade at home or trade retail. That is a death sentence in the fund world
I have heard from other people to major in philosophy instead. Why is that if your trade at home or retail a death sentence? Thanks for input so far.
