Are you sure IB doesn't allow shorting or were there no shares available at the time you tried to short.
Iborrowdesk.com (which scrapes IB's short availability) shows they currently have a small amount of stock available to short at a rate of 500%.

 

Hmm,the goofy thing appears to be halted but the stock split doesn't happen until 6/16. WTF?
