Intel T7500 replacement? i5-2xxxM ? IO throughput?

I am searching for a machine to replace my Thinkpad T61p (I literally got the last one made by Lenovo made under IBM's engineers supervision).

As mentioned in another post: Due to deteriorating eyesight I am interested into going to a desktop but I want one that is pretty quiet so will be wanting a mobile CPU.

I am running some custom software and due to increased throughput I am getting IO bound. (FSB is 800 Mhz). The CPU is basically idling so do not need a powerfull one.

It appears Intel has brought back hyperthreading and that a CPU like the i5-2410M has DMI 2.0 for communicating with its surroundings.

The performance measurements I see for a lot of tests do not tell me enough about the IO throughput. Surely someone under you must have upgraded from the T2500 - T7700 family to an i3 / i5 / i7 and have a lot of symbols up that requires a lot of IO. Please can you let me know what differences you noticed?

    Thank you in advance.
