I think long term investment in both Intel and AMD is prudent. I personally invest in both individually as well as part of my index funds and ETFs.
Definitely like intel for a long term but AMD is beginning to eat into market share. Will be keeping an eye for sure
The processor market is not only INTC and AMD. AAPL has the ARM based M1 chip. It's just as good if not better. Node technology and chip design go hand in hand.
With the INTC 12th gen chip launch, AMD struck back to price cut. Price war ain't good. IBM chip is way behind the curve. It's so bad that IBM puked on Globalfoundries. Like I what I have said earlier, chip design and note technology go hand in hand. Why dump 7nm? Poor yield is a nightmare in wafer works. The only threat to x86 is ARM. IBM lawsuit against GlobalFoundries moves forward after fraud claim tossed (timesunion.com)
INTC, AMD, TI etc used to have vertical operation from fab to final production. For example, AMD went fab less and sold all its backend opertations. Why? Semi packaging and test is moving very fast. High investment(packing and test equipment are not cheap) and margin is razor thin.
Mighty INTC couldn't make the yield target in 10nm and have to port its 11th gen back to 14nm. Finally, its 12th gen(Alder Lake) is in 10nm/7nm. Stuck at 14nm for many years. With vertical, one can control its destiny in term of capacity. In a sinking ship like AMD once was, they have to throw away everything to keep the ship afloat. IF TSMC for some unkown reason, cannot deliver the Ryzen wafer, AMD screwed 10x over. There is no second source option for AMD !
