I just called a Prometric testing center and they said that a calculator would be "provided for me". so I assume that I can't bring my own. This is a problem because I don't know how to use a standard calculator. i've used only RPN for as long as I can remember.
The calculator provided is a very simple one, with basic functions... But that is enough to do the maths, don't worry.
is the series 3 sufficient to become a legit CTA in the US, and trade futures options fx equities bonds etc on behalf of clients, or is more required?
You have to pass the Series 3 first, then to register with the CFTC and to become member of the NFA ($750/year), and to draft your first disclosure documents describing your strategies/investments to be a legit CTA in the US, trading futures, options and FX on behalf of clients. You may not need to register (there are several exemptions from registration), but to become a CTA who manages real money and wants to promote himself as a CTA, you would need to register with the CFTC/NFA. You should read the regulation: http://www.nfa.futures.org http://www.nfa.futures.org/nfaManual/entireManual.asp http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?c=ecfr&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title17/17cfr4_main_02.tpl
