Although pivot levels R3, R4, S3 and S4 are rarely used, I have found three different formulas for them, two of these are also repeatedly mentioned in this forum. So is there anybody who would explain to me, which is the more widely used formula? Here is just an example for R3:

    Formula 1: R3 = R1 + Range = High + 2*(PP-Low)

    Formula 2: R3 = R2 + Range = PP + 2*(High-Low)

    Formula 3 : R3 = R2 + (PP-S1) = High + Range

While the third formula is somewhat exotic, formula 1 and 2 are widely used. You may want to check the following sources

    Formula 1:

    - J. Welles Wilder: New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems
    - J.F. Carter : Mastering The Trade

    - also used for Woodie's Pivots just with a different formula for the main pivot

    Formula 2:

    Formula 3 :

The most interesting source I found, was the "The Reaction Trend System" as described by J. Welles Wilder in his book "New Concepts In Technical Trading Systems" from 1978. You will find definitions for R2 (Buy Point B1), R3 (High Breakout Point HBOP), S2 (Sell Point S1), S3 (Low Breakout Point, LBOP) that conform to formula 1.

Personally I am using Formula 1, because the Formula 2 values for R3 amd S3 are too far away from R2 and S2, but I would like to hear other opinions on the subject ! :)
