As far as Trump's response by closing our border with China in late January, it was early, allowing some to possibly question whether it was necessary yet. However, it was still a half-assed move. For Trump's recognition the virus was serious enough to close borders would by logical extension also require other actions taken immediately that were taken at a much later time. We need decentralized authority for pandemic management, like the Federal Reserve is supposed to be. That way, decisions can be made on scientific principles and not on a political basis. Yes the effects on the economy need to be considered and members of a pandemic response committee might be compromised by political ideology, but there could be a procedure in place where Congress and the President could challenge a single member preemptorily per term or for cause requiring a formal investigation. It may be beneficial to have a provision of a cost for failed investigations such as a loss of a peremptory challenge by the losing party in a future term. Our Government has been disfunctional for a long time and it would be a shame to not take advantage of a crisis. In a good way for a change.
