Sweden’s Covid Strategist Drops Daily Briefings Amid Scandal
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...trategist-drops-daily-briefings-amid-backlash

Sweden’s top health authority will drop daily press briefings that had provided updates on the country’s Covid-19 infection rate and death toll.

The decision comes amid a furore over Sweden’s strategy to fight the pandemic, after state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell admitted his approach was flawed
. Instead of every day, updates will now only be provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Sweden’s softer lockdown has resulted in one of the world’s highest death rates, relative to its population. But both Tegnell and Prime Minister Stefan Lofven have insisted there’s no need to change strategies. The controversy had turned the briefings into public grillings during which Tegnell was increasingly pressed to explain himself.

The development has embarrassed the government and led to a dramatic slump in Swedish support for the country’s Covid response. During a debate with party leaders on Wednesday, Lofven acknowledged Sweden should have conducted more tests for the virus.

Meanwhile, members of the opposition have stepped up their attack. Jimmie Akesson, the leader of the populist Sweden Democrats, accused Lofven of “hiding behind” the country’s health experts.

According to a statement published by the Public Health Agency of Sweden, the decision to drop daily briefings takes effect “from now,” and will continue to apply “during the summer.”

once again GWB bringing the propaganda....
no lockdown... very similar death rate to many of the countries.

Last week it was a peaking, rapidly rising death rate... worst in the world or whatever bullshit they could figure out based on out of context data...

now its the soft lockdown provided one of the worlds highest death rates...

    all such shit..

for comparision to GWBs bullshit last week...
look at the daily deaths for yourself and see how GWB and his propaganda have been lying their assess off.

Daily deaths is at the bottom and you can see instead of rapidly rising its trending down...

    GWB...

At what point are you going to admit have been wrong about Sweden.
You have been predicting it to be destroyed and instead daily deaths are trending down.
Even if they were to tick up a little...
Sweden is nothing like the disaster you and your team had been predicting.

When do you admit you were wrong?

I am completely correct about Sweden. Even Swedish officials are now stating I am completely correct.

Sweden managed to BOTH tank their economy and have one of the highest death rates on the face of the earth.

    Their policy was completely misguided.

Let's look at the 4th point from one of the world's leading medical scientists, William Haseltine, is saying:

    4. ‘Herd immunity’ is a dubious prospect.

Haseltine also thinks you can forget about herd immunity as some kind of saving grace. There is a reason that we all get colds every year and that’s because immunity to the four corona viruses that cause colds doesn’t last long.

“There’s no such thing as herd immunity for this disease. I doubt it will ever exist,” Haseltine said in a Reuters interview, because “people who have had it are getting reinfected.” He thinks Sweden made a bad mistake going for herd immunity, and then cites the nation’s death rate which is higher than any other Scandinavian country.

you have no idea on relative basis whose economy is doing what. Many are not fully open and reporting data yet. It will be 3 to 6 months before we have a strong idea of how much damage your shutdown did. And it could be longer if mortgages and evictions are delayed.

But you can see that their daily deaths and death totals are very similar to many other countries....

you were predicting their absolute destruction.
    why did it not happen?
when will you admit you were wrong?

the first chart below tells you the whole story... in the perfect context.
This chart is not possible given what you were telling us about Covid and what would happen to Sweden if they did not lock down.

Can you see that Sweden is the red line. It's below many shutdown countries in both the aligned charts and the real time chart below it.

Now that Sweden has tanked its economy worse than many of its neighbors... here is the revised claim... certainly conflicts with their early claims that their COVID response would save the economy.

Sweden Says Covid Strategy Was Never About Shielding the Economy
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...trategy-was-never-about-shielding-the-economy

Sweden’s finance minister says it was never the government’s intention to adopt a relaxed Covid-19 strategy in order to protect the economy.

Speaking in an interview in Stockholm, Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson said, “We haven’t taken economic considerations when we have decided on the Swedish strategy.”

Sweden’s softer lockdown has resulted in one of the world’s highest death rates, relative to the population. At the same time, Andersson said in May that her country was facing a “very deep economic crisis,” with GDP set to sink about about 7%, despite the softer lockdown.

The decisions taken in Sweden have fed into a global debate over the economic consequences of shuttering a society to fight a pandemic. Some analysts have argued that Sweden’s economy is likely to fare better, while others suggest the opposite is true. The data so far have been mixed.

Andersson said her recent prediction that Sweden is now facing its worst recession since World War II still holds. But she also said there are “quite a few indications of an upturn, from a very low level,” and “consumption has dropped less in Sweden than in other countries.”

Even so, Sweden’s recession is likely to be roughly as bad as that in the European Union, which estimates an average GDP decline of 7.4% this year.

“Uncertainty remains high and unemployment is likely to continue increasing,” Andersson said.

Sweden’s Covid-19 strategy has also plunged the country into a political crisis. Last week, the chief epidemiologist admitted he’d made mistakes and that he’d probably have advised a somewhat broader lockdown with the benefit of hindsight. But he and Prime Minister Stefan Lofven have both pledged to stick with the current strategy.

A poll last week showed that Swedes’ confidence in their government’s handling of the crisis has plunged by almost 20 percentage points to less than half the population. Key members of the opposition in parliament have started demanding consequences, and accused Lofven of mishandling the situation.

For now, Swedish authorities are hoping that their strategy, which is designed to be more sustainable than sudden and severe lockdowns, will bear fruit in the long run.

“We have listened to our experts and their assessment of what is the most effective long term to curb the pandemic,” Andersson said.

The Swedes are butthurt that every country is refusing to open their borders to them.
Maybe they should have had a better COVID-19 policy beyond "let's kill as many people as possible".

Sweden indignant as Finland excludes it from travel curb easing
    https://news.yahoo.com/finland-lifts-travel-restrictions-neighbours-093817848.html

Finland's government said on Thursday it will lift coronavirus-related restrictions on leisure travel to and from neighbouring Baltic and Nordic countries, but excluded Sweden, prompting indignation in Stockholm.

"Unfortunately, the epidemic situation in Sweden does not enable giving up the restrictions yet," Minister of Interior Maria Ohisalo told reporters.

The Swedish government said the Nordics are one of the most interconnected regions and jointly represent the world's 11th largest economy.

"There is indignation over the situation, not least in border areas. Sweden has not closed its borders in the Nordics," a spokeswoman for Sweden's Minister of Interior Mikael Damberg told Reuters.

For tourists to and from Denmark, Iceland and Norway, as well as Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, where the infection rate is similar to Finland's, restrictions will be lifted on June 15, Ohisalo said.

They will remain on Finland's eastern land border with Russia and on the western border with Sweden.

"Sweden is a very important border neighbour and partner country for Finland," Ohisalo said, adding the restrictions would be lifted "as soon as the epidemic situation permits".

Transit traffic via Helsinki airport will be allowed, enabling national carrier Finnair to restart connecting flights from Asia to Europe, the government said.

Sweden has adopted fewer restrictions than its neighbours and by June 10, Sweden's COVID-19 deaths were 4,717 - four times the number in the other Nordic countries combined.

Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said Finland hoped its relaxation would lead to reciprocity, adding Norway and Denmark had promised to consider including it in their travel bubble.

The epidemic has slowed in Finland, with the total number of cases at 7,040 on Wednesday and 28 patients hospitalised, of which only 4 are in intensive care, health officials said.

From the start of July, public gatherings, such as sporting events, of more than 500 people will be allowed if social distancing rules can be respected, the government said.
