Sweden readies new measures as Covid-19 cases accelerate
    https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2021/0223/1198710-covid-global/

Sweden is preparing new measures to try to curb a resurgence in Covid-19 cases as the coronavirus strain first detected in Britain spreads rapidly.

Sweden has avoided lockdowns throughout the pandemic. But health statistics agency figures today showed 10,933 new coronavirus cases had been registered since Friday, a rise from 9,458 in the corresponding period the previous week.

"The British variant is increasing very fast," Chief Epidemiologist Anders Tegnell told a news conference.

"This variant will with fairly high probability be the dominant one within a few weeks or a month."

"We have a package (of national measures) being readied that will be presented tomorrow," he said, but gave no details.

The variant is thought by scientists to be a more infectious strain. Cases of the variants first detected in South Africa and Brazil have also been reported but are not spreading quickly, Dr Tegnell said.

Concerns about a possible third wave of the pandemic have been growing in Sweden in recent weeks as the number of new infections rose and the new variants spread.

The government has laid the ground for potential lockdown measures to an extent not seen earlier during the pandemic.

Several of Sweden's largest regions, including Stockholm, have also taken steps, such as recommending the use of masks in shops, workplaces and public transport.

This is at odds with the health agency's past reluctance to broadly endorse such moves because of limited evidence of their efficacy.Sweden, a country of 10 million people, has registered 12,713 deaths from Covid-19.

The death rate per capita is much higher than its Nordic neighbours but lower than in several countries in Europe that opted for lockdowns.

Face-Mask Skepticism Fades in Sweden as Infection Rates Rise
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...mask-skepticism-fades-as-infection-rates-rise

Authorities in Stockholm and a number of other regions across Sweden are abandoning their earlier skepticism and advising people to rely more on face masks, as the country braces for a third wave of coronavirus infections.

The development marks a reversal of Sweden’s previous doubts regarding face coverings, and coincides with an increase in transmission rates. On Tuesday, Stockholm authorities recommended the use of masks on public transport, not just in rush hour but at all times. They also want coverings to be used in shops and in offices.

The number of new coronavirus cases rose 27% last week in the Swedish capital, which not that long ago saw its intensive-care resources pushed to the brink.
The relentlessness of the virus has driven Sweden’s government to reconsider its hands-off approach, and parliament enacted legislation last month to allow tougher pandemic restrictions.

Sweden’s stance on face masks has long been controversial, with state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell repeatedly questioning their efficacy. But after almost a year of intense debate, such coverings are set to become more widespread in Scandinavia’s most populous nation.

“We need to increase face-mask wearing a lot,” infection control officer Maria Rotzen Ostlund said. “However, disposable face masks are only a complement, and the most important thing is to keep a distance.”

    Sweden’s Mask Debate...
Sweden’s Public Health Agency has long questioned the science behind face masks as an effective tool during a pandemic, and warned that such coverings risk creating a false sense of security that might lead people to grow complacent on social-distancing guidelines. But that view has come under fire from critics, including Sweden’s Royal Academy of Sciences, which published a report to support the use of face masks as a meaningful way to stop transmission.

You present no facts.... and have no understanding of reality. It's not really worth time to respond to you generally. All you do is invent fabrications and call other people names who present the truth.

    You are Lying again.

I presented two articles one from you favorite source stating elementary schools were never closed and asked you to explain.

Instead of explaining, or admitting you got the facts wrong, you doubled down on lying.

You are fearful, dissembling, selfish... propagandist.

You've gone through it. We haven't gone through anything, as you just "speak" to hear yourself, essentially.

Your statement is about what I am trying to argue. I'm not trying to argue anything. I'm saying that the data makes me ask questions - that's it.

Perhaps if you led with the comment you just quoted instead of saying "correlation does not mean causation. You should know better than to post this" we might be having better discourse. But you seemed determined to not admit error at any cost, and that's just making all the observations I've made about you more accurate.

To me the key statement above is from Sweden's Chief Epidemiologist Anders Tegnell...

It's obvious now that Sweden has access to data about the Covid-19 variants that's arrived in Sweden from route of the United Kingdom.

Maybe they've already done it but I would be surprise if Sweden targets arrivals into Sweden via the airports, border crossing via requiring mandatory quarantine at designated hotels for several days until they can be given a Covid-19 test.

Here in Québec they are doing such for all arrivals and the required 3 day hotel stay is at the expense of the traveler...no exception. Not sure how successful this will be because its only recently been applied but if its successful...I wouldn't be surprise of Sweden is being pro-active instead of reactive to the growing Covid-19 variants threat.

Sweden also knows via their own research that their citizens are becoming less careful about Covid-19 along with the fact that their Effective R0 number is increasing.
