Sweden is the only country in Europe without a face mask requirement... Sweden can’t figure out what the rest of the world knows about face masks https://bgr.com/2020/12/05/coronavi...s-in-sweden-surging-but-no-face-mask-mandate/ Despite the trends in the latest global coronavirus update, Sweden is still resisting the policies pursued in much of the Western world to fight the pandemic — like lockdowns and face mask mandates. No surprise, the country’s death rate from the coronavirus is ticking upward, even though some health officials there think face masks wouldn’t be helpful in reducing it. The World Health Organization in recent days expanded its suggestions for when and where face masks should be worn to curb the spread of the coronavirus. As the coronavirus pandemic has unfolded throughout this year, Sweden has stood, if not alone, then as a clear outlier among nations that have raced to implement tough restrictions and even lockdown measures, along with face mask mandates to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The latest coronavirus update from Johns Hopkins University shows that, globally, more than 65.5 million COVID-19 cases have been reported worldwide since the onset of the pandemic, along with more than 1.5 million deaths from the virus. Yet unlike many nations, Sweden has steadfastly resisted a lockdown strategy as well as a face mask mandate, preferring instead to let its citizens continue about their lives while encouraging them to act responsibly. So, how’s that going? Well, on Thursday, deaths in the country had jumped above 7,000, one day after the World Health Organization expanded its guidelines for when and where face masks should be worn. “Face masks may be needed in some situations,” Sweden’s chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said at a news conference on Thursday, with that slight, barely-there acknowledgement of the efficacy of face masks in stark contrast to the clear evidence that they save lives. “Those situations have not arisen in Sweden yet, according to our dialogue with the (healthcare) regions. WHO is clear that the state of evidence for masks is weak. All studies so far suggest that it is much more important to keep your distance than to have a face mask.” Per Reuters, the 35 new COVID-19 deaths recorded on Thursday in Sweden brought the country’s total to 7,007. In terms of cases, Sweden recorded another 6,485 on Thursday, compared to 7,240 daily cases two weeks ago. Also on Thursday, the Royal Academy of Sciences — which awards Nobel prizes — warned that Sweden should reverse course regarding its resistance to recommending that its citizens wear face masks to keep themselves safe from the virus. The Royal Academy of Sciences issued a report saying that, among other things, face masks can help reduce the spread of coronavirus infection, especially indoors.
Sweden toughens up on COVID-19 restrictions as cases surge https://nypost.com/2020/12/06/sweden-toughens-up-on-covid-19-restrictions-as-cases-surge/ Sweden has rolled out harsher COVID-19 restrictions after refusing to order a nationwide lockdown and instead largely relying on voluntary measures. The Nordic nation has ordered large gathering bans, alcohol sale curfews and school closures as part of a clampdown that began last month amid rising cases and hospitalizations, the Wall Street Journal reported. “This is the new norm for the entire society,” Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said at a press conference. “Don’t go to gyms, don’t go to libraries, don’t host dinners. Cancel.” Public gatherings are now restricted to eight people, down from a previous limit of 300 as part of the tougher restrictions. The country also banned the sale of alcohol in bars, restaurants and night clubs after 10 p.m. until the end of February. High schools will also switch to virtual learning on Monday for the rest of the term. “This is being done so as to have a slowing effect on the spread of the disease,” Lofven said in announcing the school closures. The about-face in strategy comes as health experts fear hospitals could soon become overwhelmed by a second wave of the virus, the newspaper reported. “Authorities chose a strategy totally different to the rest of Europe, and because of it the country has suffered a lot in the first wave,” Piotr Nowak, a physician at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, told the newspaper. “We have no idea how they failed to predict the second wave.” Anders Tegnell, the nation’s top epidemiologist, has repeatedly defended the country calling for citizens to hold themselves accountable for social distancing, instead of closing borders and ordering lockdowns. But Tegnell, who predicted the country could gain herd immunity, acknowledged last month that the Swedes were facing a resurgence of the virus, after initially suggesting that a second wave was unlikely. “I don’t think the definition is that important, but we see community spread in many regions simultaneously right now,” Tegnell said. To date, the nation has recorded more than 278,000 infections, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University. Sweden’s death tally has climbed above 7,000, while comparatively-sized neighbors Denmark, Finland and Norway have reported 885, 415 and 354 fatalities respectively, data shows. The relaxed approach to the pandemic also failed to protect the economy, which saw unemployment is predicted to hit nearly 10 percent in the beginning of 2021, the Wall Street Journal reported.
I understand clearly what they're doing...more restrictive than their prior "Lockdown Lite" experiment (their words) but short of using the word "Lockdown" as to shutting everything down. Essentially, Sweden is doing what most countries are doing now with these restrictions / measures. Most likely, they too are dependent upon a vaccine to achieve herd immunity which is what the world was trying to get them to understand was the only way to achieve such without killing off a large percentage of their population and/or ruining the economy. We're all in the same boat although some countries like Brazil, India, United States are really now the ground zero of Covie-19 infections, hospitalizations and deaths. Herd Immunity via natural (not vaccine) has failed regardless to the fact that they've seem to have put a muzzle on their top epidemiologist while we all wait for distribution of a vaccine. wrbtrader
How many times have you posted an article with essentially the same information... It has to be close to at least 10. I don't know who is paying you to be a fear monger... but you are ripping them off.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/sweden/ Let's hope that Sweden had topped in daily new cases.
Would that be like how many times you posted that Canada was "exploding" in Covid ? Might be time to admit you were wrong about Sweden and move on. If you can.
I do it in response to your bullshit... I have nothing against Canada.. and have not posted much about Canada at all recently... you have not been on the threads telling me how great Canada is doing... (at least not while I was reading.) But... you walked into it again... So I just checked worldometer... Covid cases are still exploding in Canada... Its now like 3x times higher than before your first failed lockdown. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/canada
