Although I don't know what this has to do with Scandinavian countries or Sweden... If your comments has to to with the political spectrum in the United States, its not uncommon for politics to impact decisions in a health crisis. The Republican party are in charge as in its under their watch when the Pandemic hit the United States and the response to the Pandemic. This has happen before under Republican watch...1981 Reagan (HIV) and 1976 Gerald Ford (Swine Flu). Like Trump...they didn't cause the infection but the "response" is under their watch. Years from today, the Republicans will most likely view Trump as the Trojan Horse (reform party) to their agenda...just my guess. Remember, there are not any more Lockdowns...just targeted restrictions now and the growing fear of another Lockdown with governments making a promise not to lockdown again but the health organizations keeps engaging that fear via saying follow the health guidelines to avoid another lockdown. You can not go back in time and tell the Republicans what to do...too late for that. Going forward, you can follow the health crisis guidelines to get the crap over with and then move on. Yet, next time, be very careful about whom you elect to lead your government just in case there's another Pandemic. Why a Lockdown for Covid-19 and not the prior Pandemics ? Many articles online that answers that questions along with giving statistical data about why. In my opinion, the issue is not a Lockdown especially when I look at the Covid-19 performance of countries that did not do a lockdown...comparing Brazil to South Korea. That tells me there's other critical variables involved like cultural habits, healthcare system and the government leadership response. I could be wrong and the Lockdowns had been all about Politics while the targeted restrictions are more about the health crisis... Regardless, a very confusing / interweaving topic - Health Crisis & Politics wrbtrader
You made statements like these in the past... and I sort of let them slide since you are not American... but if you are going make political comments.. I am going to have to explain the U.S. Constitution to you. The U.S. Constitution reserves police powers to the state... "Police powers" have to do with health and safety. Lockdown policy is properly before and must be left to each individual state. Trump and Republicans or Democrats in Congress did not really have the option of a National lockdown because of our Federalist system.
I'll let you slide "again" but will repeat this "again" to you due to your lapse in memory. I'm an American citizen, own a home in America, undergrad / graduate degree in America, served honourably in the U.S. Army as an Officer in the Armed Forces of America, I do vote in the elections of America although I missed the 2016 presidential vote due to hospitalization... Also, I live abroad by choice...not unusual consider I grew up in a multi-generation military family that served in the U.S. Armed Forces abroad. I vote in the France elections, Canada elections and the United States elections. By the way, I have a very strong understanding of the U.S. Constitution. Therefore, keep your explanation to yourself...its a waste of your time nor is it welcome. Yet, you're welcome to your opinion about the "response" (lack of) by the Trump administration that leads this country considering it is the "Political" thread section. Don't worry...no need for you to apologize about your "...since you are not American" comment. I do understand you're intentionally naive about how things have occurred with the Trump administration in 2020 and still looking to blame instead of working to get this crap of restrictions put behind you like waking up from a nightmare. I'll ask again...how does the situation with San Diego beaches impact you...a question I've asked multiple times before that you've not answered ??? Now back to the topic...in a thread about Sweden and Scandinavian countries (laughable) while some like you keep bringing the U.S. political system into the discussion... Get over it...the United States is not a Scandinavian country nor Sweden. Seriously, didn't you catch on to my earlier sarcasm when I recommended that you should move from California or get a 2nd home or go on an extended vacation if you didn't like it there. I even gave you a short list of places in the United States less impacted by Coronavirus and less impacted by lockdowns. By the way, this happen in another Sweden thread that eventually was moved to the Political thread section. The thread truth wasn't about Sweden...it was about U.S. politics and the lockdowns fault. P.S. This thread about Sweden was also moved here in the Political section awhile back because you guys continue bringing U.S. politics into a discussion about Sweden's lockdown...ooops...meant "lockdown lite". P.S.S. Do you remember one of your first posts in this thread in which you seem to not agree that Canada is doing better than United States in its Covid-19 performance ??? Not sure if you got your answer but here's my opinion. The superior outcome even with the current worried spikes in Canada (put the blame on Quebec). Cultural / healthcare system / leadership response to the Pandemic...should be obvious by now. I have a unique perspective than most considering I own residences in both countries, used the healthcare system in both countries, have private insurance in both countries and understand the political parties in both countries. wrbtrader
1. If you did serve thank you. 2. Just a page or two back you gave us detailed info about Canada and referred to the U.S. as they. Americans would say we. At least that is what every reader would expect. So you are going to have excuse my mistake thinking you were not American. It was not about my memory... it was about you odd statements. 3. My comment about the US being a Federalist system still stand. You have been blaming the wrong people for shutdown... or it least implying it was Trump and Republicans fault. That is a state by state police power. It was the governors. 4. I know you can get cute and say... but Trump's response still sucked. I am inclined to agree to some extent depending on the criticism... but shutdown was not his fault. 5. Finally you told you me you told us you are ignorant about San Diego and did not wish to discuss it or something like that. So why would I feel compelled to answer you question about San Diego. -- Something does not add up about your comments. Its almost like you are 2 people.
This is a discussion forum with a Political section that Baron (owner) states if one is easily offended...this is not a place to hang out. Personally, very little gets under my skin but one sure way is someone stating I'm not an American citizen in comparison to someone stating you do not act like an American. Maybe you meant to say I don't act like an American. That's very true and I have no shame in admitting such. The point is this, I have citizenship in three different countries regardless to my usage of WE or THEY. Also, I talk often here at ET about my fondness for South Dakota, Chicago, Fort Campbell Kentucky, South Korea, South France and Québec Canada...all locations I've lived and currently have family members that have served in the military too in either the United States, South Korea or France military branches. If there was no Pandemic...at one point in the same year...I would be at one of the above locations especially Chicago, South France or Québec Canada (my current location and primary residence). Also, I'm very proud of the fact that I can vote in the elections of three different countries...I've already sent off my Absentee ballot to the United States for their elections. Not many people can do that...vote in the elections of three different countries. By the way, when you stated its like I'm two people...its more like three people (United States, Canada and France)...French mother, Lakota father and Military Attitude. We'll just have to agree to disagree about Trump's responsibility. Forget about the San Diego beach conversation...I was just curious why it was so important because you mentioned it many times. I actually thought maybe you had a business on / near the beach that was dependent upon traffic to the beach. wrbtrader
Sweden: Students Told To Stop Partying As Coronavirus Cases Rise https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidn...tying-as-coronavirus-cases-rise/#1826dcf9719d After months of being the poster-child for a laissez-faire approach to the coronavirus pandemic, Sweden seems to be toughening its stance as authorities fear a second wave. Students are being warned to stop gathering for parties and other events, while Swedish regions will soon get the power to introduce stricter local guidelines. Students warned The Swedish Public Health Agency recently announced that outbreaks in at least eight regions have been traced back to private parties among university students. Higher Education Minister Matilda Ernkrans told Sveriges Radio that students “need to focus on their education and not partying,” otherwise campuses could be closed as they were earlier in the year. To date, approximately 200 of Sweden’s 400,000 university students have received a positive test result after attending a student party or gathering. So far, Sweden’s students appear to be taking the warning seriously. The organiser of an annual 400-person party in Stockholm told SVT it was a “boring but rational decision to take” following its cancellation. Positive test numbers rising Sweden has so far avoided the second wave of positive COVID-19 tests that is sweeping across much of Europe, including its Scandinavian neighbors Norway and Denmark. Yet despite the early celebrations from supporters of its controversial approach, there are now clear signs that a second wave is becoming a reality following two weeks of rising numbers. The latest press conference from the Swedish Public Health Agency revealed that the number of positive tests has now passed 100,000. A corresponding increase in the number of deaths is yet to be seen, with the number standing at 5,899. Care homes the main concern The difference seems to be explained by the demographic of new cases. Most of the latest cases involve people aged 20-50. However, state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said there are “concerning signs” that elderly care homes are under threat again. In the early stages of the pandemic, the coronavirus swept through the country’s elderly care homes. A large proportion of the almost 6,000 deaths recorded in Sweden occurred in care homes during April and May. It was only after a nationwide ban on visits and other measures were belatedly introduced that the numbers started to drop. Tegnell said that while the the number of cases in care homes remains low compared to the spring, the number of positive test results has recently doubled. "It is important now that care homes pay attention, that they test generously and make it possible for staff to stay at home and also test staff very generously," said Tegnell. Giving power to Swedish regions Sweden’s national recommendations to work from home where possible and avoid large gatherings remain in place. Stricter advice applies to people in risk groups or aged over 70 But from October 19, regional authorities will have the power to introduce stricter local guidelines for all residents. According to the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare, such guidelines could include avoiding public transport, unnecessary travel, visiting people in risk groups, and visiting busy indoor areas such as shopping malls.
For the past 45 days... Sweden has been using targeting specific problematic areas in their population and economy to battle any hotspots starting to form in their fight against Coronavirus although their overall numbers are great...not sure why they're using more restrictions as if they know something that others do not know. Less worry in Sweden and many other countries about the elderly today...more worry about the young people that may have underlying medical conditions. wrbtrader
The COVID approach in western nations has evolved to "targeted lockdowns" and "targeted mitigation measures" by city and region -- rather than broad country-wide lockdowns and mitigation measures. From some perspective this targeted approach by region makes sense --- when the COVID cases and transmission rate rises above a threshold in a city or region than mitigation and/or lockdown measures are applied. The downside of this approach is that it only works if people do not travel in or out of the region.
