    Stu,

No, I was not kidding. I see no point to living forever. I just wasted an hour or so taking a nap since my last post. If I was going to live forever, I would have went back to sleep. As it is, I have things to do. I am going to the grocery store, am going to open every freezer door, so they all get frosty and no one can see what they want. Then I am going to buy 6 donuts. I can eat 12, but after 6 the joy really wears off. Then I am going to read the paper and look at several hundred stock charts. This week I have a date, dinner planned with some friends, several items of charity work to do, and a few other items of interest.

All in all, a decent life, better than most will ever have. But I have no desire to do it forever. At some point, some other kid needs to grow and and experience life, if I stay they will never be able to do that.

  3. if there is no point in living forever (as you say), then there is no point in living at all. the only point in living is living forever. until then, living is pointless. get the point?

    Katrina,

No I would not want to live without sex. But what makes sex fun is that you take time out to do it every once in a while, and it feels great. If I could just snap my fingers and have any woman I want, well that would be really cool. Then living forever, thanks to Viagra would be worth it.

As for the careers, sure I have varied interests. There are a lot of things I would love to do, but I have to choose. I do a lot of work with underprivileged and at-risk kids. And I know that there are a few who's lives are dramatically changed. But there are far more who are in the same sad state, and always will be.

So what makes it satisfying is working for a breakthrough. If I could just show up, snap and the kids would have a better world, what would really be the point? I would have no concept of failure, no concept of dissatisfaction with the outcome, no reason to change, and if I lived forever, no timeframe to change within.

Finally, I would ask how has an event like Sept 11 changed your life? Obviously, I would like to go back to Sept 10, as I think most people would. But why has it changed your life?

  5. If you honestly feel that way, and that life is pointless, and nothing matters -- why not just kill yourself now in a painless way instead of having to live each day with that sad depressing thought that you are one day closer to dieing?

Anyone who says life is pointless has never truly lived.

I would agree, living for the sake of living is pointless. It is what we add to our lives and the lives of others that makes life worthwhile.

To give an example, I am 32. One of the people who has had some of the most positive impact in my life is a Vietnam vet I met when I was in college. Part of his life was destroyed forever by what he had to see and do. Part of my life is better because of his experiences, and how he channeled the lessons to me.

  9. ok what's the point in living? where is my error?

yes life is pointless as i see it. you're born, spend the rest learning and wising up, then die. yippee! that's of real value.

no i am not going to end my life voluntarily, with my own hand. no way, i want to live not die. it's just that it all seems so pointless, but this beats the hell out of second place.

  10. What would it be like to live forever? There is no way of knowing until you try it. Probably the same as now. It is what you make it.

To not want immortality is a bit odd. I mean who does not want to live? Sure you can find exceptions but there are always reasons for wanting to live. Say would you want to die tomorrow? No? When tomorrow comes would you want to die the next day then. If you postpone your demise in this manner long enough you have an eternity.
