If SEC bans ALL short selling, when do existing short positions have to be covered?

  1. If the SEC does ban ALL short selling, will those with existing shorting positions be allowed to keep those open?

I would assume that the ban would be for STARTING new short positions..?

  2. the UK ban is for creating or adding to positions. It does not require covering existing positions. Further, it is only for bank stocks. The US would probably do the same.

  3. That's what I thought, but you never know when it comes to the government.

What about the ban on NAKED short selling in the US? Did those positions have to be closed starting today? When do all naked short positions have to be covered in the US?
