Does R.M. know more about treating 'incurable' depression than most psychiatrists?

Chapter 5

How it works:

Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program, usually men and women who are constitutionally incapable of being honest with themselves. There are such unfortunates. They are not at fault; they seem to have been born that way. They are naturally incapable of grasping and developing a manner of living which demands rigorous honesty. Their chances are less than average. There are those, too, who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders, but many of them do recover if they have the capacity to be honest.

Our stories disclose in a general way what we used to be like, what happened, and what we are like now. If you have decided you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it - then you are ready to take certain steps.

At some of these we balked. We thought we could find an easier, softer way. But we could not. With all the earnestness at our command, we beg of you to be fearless and thorough from the very start. Some of us have tried to hold on to our old ideas and the result was nil until we let go absolutely.

Remember that we deal with depression - cunning, baffling, powerful! Without help it is too much for us. But there is One who has all power - that One is God. May you find Him now!

Half measures availed us nothing. We stood at the turning point. We asked His protection and care with complete abandon.

Here are the steps we took, which are suggested as a program of recovery:

1. We admitted we were powerless over depression - that our lives had become unmanageable.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to compulsive debtors, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

2. LOL... I don't think the 12 step cult has even expanded into depression 'treatment'. You just took the AA/NA text, and changed a few words to try and piss me off.

Z-Satan, Quit sniping at me from afar like the little pussy you are, and let's have a good old fashioned brawl. Man to umm... creature.

Let's do some
krav maga 'sparring practice', Z-Commie.

I don't work out at all, smoke heavily, have stick skinny arms, and my entire knowledge of krav maga consists of a one week course taken 12 years ago in the army. My only advantage is that I hate you a hell of alot more than you hate me. That edge will be quite enough to enable me to tear you limb from limb at my leisure. Face and crotch guards would be worn.

How about it, little bitch? You can even sell tickets and keep the proceeds. Don't be a pussy- let's do this.

RM, you are worth what $10M?

I am wondering. Why don't you travel the world, explore, go hiking, go skiing, train to be a triathelete, etc. As you get older, I believe that all these things will come to you anyway, but don't waste your youth.

Why the hell are you posting on an anonymous message board? Why aren't you living it up in a sensible way?

Truly, I don't understand you.

6. Watch 'The Aviator'. (Mostly toward the end of the movie, and subsitute temperature for germs.)
Then you will understand me perfectly.

7. Nitro, you've been around these boards for long enough.
Z-Satan's pure evil can be subtle, and can be entirely missed at first. A newbie to these boards probably has no clue why I see this creature as I do...but Nitro...surely YOU DO?!

As a kid playing D&D, All nine alignment combinations made perfect sense to me, except one: Lawful Evil. How could a real person or thing incorporate such an odd alignment combination, and why the hell would they want to? It took me until encountering Z-satan in adulthood for me to finally and fully comprehend Lawful-Evil.

8. Nitro, you are trying to understand an addcit in a full on manic phase.

How much sense is there in you trying to understand that?

9. Rearden,

At the risk of overstaying my "welcome," may I assume that in the course of your dealing with doctors regarding your depression that you addressed, and were tested for, any potential thyroid abnormalities? I suspect that you probably did. However, I raise this point because you mentioned some difficulty with temperature (presumably external) in a prior post that I did not fully understand.

10. Tell us, satan, with all this blessed sanity you believe you have.
With all your perfection (you must be perfect in your own eyes, otherwise how else could you have gone 8,300 antagonistic, vomitous posts without once admitting you've ever made a mistake?)

Tell us now, what have you accomplished with your life?
It's ok...don't be your usual pussy self.

Tell us now, what have you accomplished with your life?
