William Hill bets on online and U.S. market as first-half profits dip

(Reuters) - Bookmaker William Hill <WMH.L> reported lower first-half profit on Wednesday and said it was shutting 119 more shops as it shifts towards online betting and expansion in the U.S. market.

The London-listed company, one of the big names in the British gambling business, said overall revenue slumped by 32% as coronavirus lockdowns shuttered its high street stores.

However, adjusted operating profit of 11.8 million pounds ($15.4 million) was better than expected as it cut costs and international online grew 17%. The company also said its dividend will remain suspended.

Shares rose as much as 8.3% to 126.9 pence by afternoon trading after the company also pointed to a good start to the second half and said it would combine its UK online and retail businesses.

William Hill has been looking to offset the impact of tightening regulations in its home market and in July last year announced 700 store closures.

U.S. states have been legalising sports betting and William Hill's momentum is likely to be boosted by the merger of casino operators Eldorado and Caesar's, it said.

"We made excellent progress in our U.S. business," Chief Executive Ulrik Bengtsson said on a media call, while also acknowledging challenges from the pandemic.

"It's hard to deny that we are already in the second wave in the U.S. to some extent ... as long as major sport events are back, we are quite confident of how this business is going to develop," Bengtsson said.

    >>> Ok hold up. As long as sports are back will be tested today. Two College fotbal divisions have said No or are they delaying the start of the season?

Jefferies analysts, who have a "buy" rating on the stock, said William Hill's current valuation "barely recognises an appropriate valuation, let alone reflecting the opportunity in the U.S.".

  2. NEE--$277.75

I've been looking at NextEra Energy for a while. Of interest is the fact that they are a REAL play on solar and wind that doesn't get the hype. I believe this is the old Florida P&L Now a green powerhouse.

Officially the biggest electric utility in North America, and the largest generator of solar and wind energy in the world.

NextEra supplies electricity to about 5.5 million customers through its two Florida electric utilities -- Florida Power & Light and Gulf Power. That ensures a steady stream of cash flow. It also generates electricity, mostly from renewable sources, about half of which supplies its Florida customers. NextEra sells the rest to other utilities around the country, giving it a second cash flow stream.<---

All that cash helps fund growth projects, mostly new solar and wind farms,
NEE is expensive but deserves a place in stable accounts.

Thanksgiving weekend this year is gonna flat out suck with no NCAA football.

    And no Macy's parade!

    New Years too.

I don't know about you Stoney, color me provincial, but I don't think I'll be able to tolerate a bunch of idiot relatives eating food, getting drunk/loud (upsetting Muttley), and generally just making a mess without the escape of the big-screen tuned into Auburn/Alabama, Mich/OSU.

  4. Trading With Yellow Flashing Lights.

Well another one of my indicators went flashing yellow yesterday. Outside reversal sort of day. Start up finish down. Not a huge deal but taken with the others...

A lot of folks are extrapolating what is going to happen when we get some big news on the vaccine. By big news I guess I mean it passes muster. Everyone is foaming over themselves saying that good vaccine news will not only justify this markets price but drive prices higher.

I guess the idea was by end of year... and we all know it has to be by election one way or another... so by definition it will be a positive surprise..

re: Anything faster than this timeline could spark the next leg of the market’s rally..

Or will it. I believe the vaccine may only be 50% effective. Say 56% that's enough for the US to move forward and fund but is that enough? 50% + may lead to herd immunity but it also may leave 50% vulnerable and then with the disease that multiplies so... that could lead to a situation when we do not stomp it out.
