    Water cooled heatsink with remote reservoir and submersed pump is quiet. A lot of work though.

  2. Not only a lot of work, but also quite expensive. Will cost over $100 for a decent setup.

  3. Sterling and others,

    Thanks for all the help!

    Here is the basic system I am looking at right now (all prices @ newegg.com):

    - ASUS A7V333 mobo (this supports the legacy ports I need, has overheating protection for the CPU, does have a few extras I don't need though... The other choice here is the ABIT KX7-333, but that doesn't have all the legacy ports.) $131

    - Samsung Original DDR333 pc2700 256mb cas2.5 (not on the mobo maker's OK list though...This was just a random pick, I have no idea which memory to get. See ASUS list below.) $72

    - MAXTOP CSX-147K2F-GF-USB-GRAY case (rear, side and top fans) $32

    - Antech 330 W Power Supply True 330 (low noice tech, then claim) $50

    - ARKUA TECH 7528 (Silence Solution) Heatsink and fan for AMD socket 462 upto XP2000+ $22

    - AMD Athlon XP2000+/266 FSB CPU OEM $137

    - 2 Vantec STEALTH 80mm fans to replace case fans 2 * $12

    Total = $468

    I will probably get a 20G HD as well, but that shouldn't be hard. I am mainly concerned about the CPU, mobo, and memory at this point.

    OK, I am really wondering about this next part... This is from the ASUS website. Should I take them seriously?

    "Note: * Use only the tested and qualified PC2700-DDR333 DIMMs listed below.
    Other DDR DIMM manufactured by other vendors may not be suitable for this motherboard.

    Vendor Type Size Model
    Nanya PC2700 256MB NT5DS16M8AT-6
    Samsung PC2700 128MB K4H280838D-TCB3
    Samsung PC2700 256MB K4H280838D-TCB3
    Micron PC2700 128MB MT8VDDT1664AG-335B1
    Micron PC2700 256MB MT16VDDT1664AG-335B1
    KINGMAX PC2700 128MB MPMA82D-68KX3
    KINGMAX PC2700 256MB MPM62D-68KX3 "

    Pokey, I do have an old PS but I want to upgrade both my machines (old machine and new one) to quieter power supplies and cpu fans. I hate the high pitched noise of a shitty fan.

    Rigel, I think that water cooling thing may be overkill for me. Also my case choice should help a lot with side and top fans...

  4. sean,

    When Asus says use only the following PC2700 (DDR333) I think they are talking about PC2700 specifically as this is the fastest DDR out right now. As I mentioned earlier you can get a much better deal on PC2100 (DDR266) and the performance isn't that much worse. THe Athlon 2000+ runs at 266 FSB anyway.

  6. hmm, pokey are you sure that the xp2000+ fsb @266 would limit the memory speed? I think with my mobo I could overclock the mem, but I don't know much about such things. Too late now, I already ordered. Hehe. I need to get this new system up and running so I am slightly rushing it here. This is what I got:

    asus a7v333 mobo
    antec true 430w silent ps
    amd athlon xp2000+ retail
    lian-li brushed aluminum case, very very cool case

    ibm 80gb 7200rpm hd
    corsair 512bm ddr pc2700 mem
    2 port KVM

    total = $800

  9. sean,

    Yeah the AthlonXP's run at 266, but you can run the memory asynchronously and YES you can overclock better with the PC2700. I didn't know you were going to overclock. If that's the case you can even run the PC2700 at Cas2.0 at 266 or just run it at 333 at Cas2.5. You can benchmark to see which has better performance. PC2700 is much more flexible and you can use it if AMD ever decides to go with 333 fsb. Definitely the better choice if you don't mind the extra money.
