Quote from Tea: How about a yellow or red light that lets you know if your connection has been interrupted or lost.

TWS and the IB server exchange a "heartbeat" messages every 15-30 seconds (or so). If TWS stops getting this heartbeat, it tells you it's not connected by showing a magenta grid over the whole quote screen. When it reconnects, the grid goes away. That's your indicator.

If your quotes freeze up without this happening, it's likely you have an intermittent problem, where the heartbeats are getting through, but some packets are still being dropped. This is usually related to ISP connectivity, though it can also be drivers/hardware on your machine.

  2. IB recently closed one of my accounts because there was less than $100 in it. btw I haven'tgotten their check yet. It had only been inactive for about 2 months. Only 2weeks later did they issue a communique notifying customers of this new policy. They said I was free to open a new account! Thanks!

It's time IB improves on its customer service. It doesn't cost a dime to be polite and helpful. I don;t think it cost much either to give precise answers to questions instead of links and copy/paste. I am satisfied so far with IB as an execution platform but I avoid dealing with their reps because it's a waste of time and source of aggravation. Some of their reps are nice(like a girl I chatted with) but as soon as you complain they usually become totally unhelpful like they don't give a damn and you just bother them.

AlsoI hate their constant upgrades .Their reps never solved that problem I have with Java RE 1.3 and 1.4. I downloadeed 1.4 but TWS doesnotrecognize it and 1.4 causes problems for websurfing.

  3. then don't upgrade. problem solved. i like upgrading and i have every upgrade and java 1.4. i have had not one problem with any upgrade or the new java. TWS runs great and web surfing has never been better. are you guys running junk OPs like win98 or ME?? are you performing routine maintenance or just cranking on it every day?

  4. You can download and install 1.4 without it effecting your web browser. Depending on your browser either the Windows registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\CurrentVersion) determines which version your browser uses or the Java Plug-in manager (in the Control Panel).

The TWS selects which Java version it uses from the startup string in the TWS icon or menu item (right click on properties).

You can have more than one version of the JRE without any problems.

  5. as mentioned in an earlier post, just opened an account and funded it Friday... this morning tried to login to see if funds received and credited, and nothing happened. Then tried login via browser based TWS, and the same result.

Could it be that IB's sytem is down?! Called their number but no recorded message to that effect. It worked fine on Friday.

    Any replies would be welcome.

  6. TWS (both browser and the standalone application) is not available on the weekends. They actually have this posted somewhere on their website but I don't believe it is easily found.

There have been suggestions on the IB forum before that they enable a clear message to people who try to log in on the weekends but there has been no change.

The demo version is supposed to be available all of the time but it also has been down sometimes on the weekend.

    Mdbud,

Please let us know how much monetary loss you are talking about here?

Is it hundreds, or is it thousands?

This would help us all put things in perspective here.

    Thanks for replying.

  9. appreciate the assist... seems a little unusual, but maybe there is a reason.

guess I'm used to firms wherein you can enter gtc orders over the weekend if so desired. But I'm a swing/position trader mostly. Went to IB to try futures and more 'day trading' against underlying option pos.

    have a good one AC
