Is there any performance difference between the IB standalone version and browser based. I have always used standalone but have run into some kind of glitches that IB doesn't seem to be able to fix at current, it was suggested I use the browser version for now. Anybody have any comments as to whether there's a difference between the two?

I doubt it. Assuming you're talking TWS standalone vs. TWS launched via JNLP through browser. (and not running as an applet, or WebTrader)

It's pretty much the exact same thing. The only slight difference might be if your Java disk cache is too small and the JNLP version flushes semi-precompiled code from its cache, needing to JIT recompile.

Though, I have never used the standalone. I do get an update now and then just in case the IB website is down.
