Ib Shorting

Discussion in 'Interactive Brokers' started by Trend Fader, Feb 27, 2004.

  1. I cant believe IB doesnt allow me to short the IWM, MDY.. and some other basic ETF's.

Any word on whats going on? I thought ETF's are supposed to be more available for shorting... I am really pissed about this. I probably will have to switch brokers because of this.

Anyone have any recommendations for a new broker.. that has similar rates as IB.. but has a much more reliable shorting list. For god sakes those are ETF's.. lol

  2. BBH & RTH can not also be shorted.

  3. Yeah, this week I noticed IWM not shortable. Sucks large. I'd like an explanation as to why.

  4. DEF... can u help us out here? There ETF's not stocks?

Never made any sense to me either, since they can be created at will (theoretically) by the sponsors, though I don't know how this is implemented in practice.

It would be nice if someone who knows could comment on the nuts and bolts of how ETF shares are "created", settled, the job of the sponsor, etc.

i've asked about this as most ETF's should be on the short list at IB. I'll find out more Monday (US time).
