    Got this email today...big improvement!

    Dear IB Customer,

IB now offers its customers two great ways to trade
using the Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation 4.0.

In addition to the browser-based version of TWS 4.0,
IB has released "TWS 4.0-Installed Version", for IB
customers who prefer to run the TWS directly as a
Windows application. TWS 4.0-Installed Version does
not require a browser to run but instead is
downloaded and installed as an application on the
user's PC. When the user wishes to trade, the user
simply launches TWS 4.0-Installed Version from their
    desktop.

IB customers are free to run either or both versions
of TWS 4.0. Note, however, that if you alternately
run the browser-based TWS and TWS 4.0-Installed
Version, each version of the software will store
separate trading pages (in other words, screens you
set up on the browser-based version will not be
displayed if you run the Installed Version, and
    vice-versa).

Among the advantages of the browser-based version
are that users can access their accounts from any PC
with an Internet connection, and that no TWS software
must be downloaded or updated in order to trade.

On the other hand, TWS 4.0-Installed Version is
attractive for users who have difficulty running
software through their Internet browsers, or simply
prefer to access the TWS faster and more directly
by launching it from their desktops. TWS
4.0-Installed Version also takes less memory to
run, since the user's Internet browser need not be
activated to trade. Note, however, that if you use
TWS 4.0-Installed Version, you must periodically
download updated versions of the software in order
to take advantage of new features.

Note also that users who upgrade directly from TWS 3.0
to TWS 4.0-Installed Version may use the Installed
Version's page converter function to transfer their
existing TWS 3.0 trading screens for use with TWS 4.0.

  2. IB has had this application version for some time now. But what is interesting about your post is the link you mention also has the upgrade release of 3/20/01.

    Thanks.

    Dustin,

Have you tried it out? I downloaded the program and when I ran it I got the regular login box. When I entered the info I briefly saw the dialog box "Login in Progress" and then it disappeared and began to flash repeatedly every 5 or 6 seconds, as if it was repeatedly trying to login. I was never able to get the program working. Have you or anyone else had this problem? I have tried logging in to both a stock and a futures account, but no luck.

    Thanks,

    Kirk

    wareagle,
you were probably trying to login a bit after midnight East Coast time. The servers reset each night at this time. The process, depending on who/what gets restarted takes about an hour. Thus if you try later you should be ok.

    Well, great improvement ?
It's the same version. OK, (a bit) faster to activate.

However, and I do not think it was mentioned, the most important advantage is the firewall/proxy support [and server selection!].

For those wondering, you still can run multiple JTWS at the same time on the same machine. Maybe I am the only one using this, but it's quite cool for me.

    def,

Thanks, that must have been the problem because all is working fine now. I like this much better because I don't have to keep a browser open. It may not make a big difference, but it just seems more stable.

    regards,

    Kirk
