IB - Natural gas futures options (LNE)

Discussion in 'Interactive Brokers' started by atrocious, Oct 27, 2016.

  1. Can someone look into why IB customers can't trade the LNE (european style) natural gas options?

They've been listed in TWS for years, you can pull them up and quote them by selecting NG->futures options->LNE, but if you try to place an order it comes back saying "can not compute volume for this contract"

The liquidity in LNE (vs the american ON style options) has picked up dramatically, open interest currently far outweighs the american style options.

The biggest advantage is the LNE is cash settled with no assignment risk into NG on the final trading day which I would assume is beneficial to IB from a risk standpoint (NG is one of the few futures contracts where IB's close out deadline occurs on the very last trading day due to the possibility of assignment on the american options).

  2. Just for comparison the European options traded 20,736 contracts yesterday on the DEC options expiration with OI of 395,662 versus 1,749/62,844 for the American options, that's almost 10x the volume.

Both contracts trade on NYMEX/GLOBEX, there should be no reason retail can't trade them, they are available through all my other FCMs
