    No way to tell.

Ping time, in a network of links without problems, is a function of propagation delay, and the number of routers. The longer the physical route, the higher the round-trip time.

Run the test a few times a day, at different times of the day, for a week or so. Jot down the times. If the times remain more or less constant you've established a baseline. After that, if the number changes you'll know whether it's good or bad.

Pushed for an answer based on no facts: if you are located somewhere out on Long Island, NY, normal. Note the variation in fastest, slowest, and average times in your early links. Something to watch.

if IB can reboot after 12:30am, when the HSI morning session finishes, it will save the trouble of having 2 accounts.

  4. Would a feature request like the following useful for you and many traders?

I have just submitted this feature request.
    ================================================
Title: More flexibility on system reset time

IB needs to reset its system every day. When the system is being reset, the account/TWS will be unavailable for trading for a few minutes in practice.

However we can only pick from two system reset time:
    23:50 – 03:00EST
    15:59 – 17:00EST

This would be a problem for traders who trade two sessions (eg Asia & US).

    May I suggest the following:
    == 1) Offer More Choices
Since IB has 3 servers, IB should at least able to offer 3 choices. It shouldn't be hard to have at least 2 reset times in each server.

== 2) Custom system reset time
Even better, let user decide when they want their account to be reset daily.

== 3) Change the Asian reset time
If all above fail, consider changing Asian reset time.
Many US markets end at 16:00/16:15EST. Some end at 17:00EST.
The earliest market to open is Australia market (19:50EST)
Change it into 17:15-18:15EST (Daylight Saving Time)

Based upon the above info, are we able to choose when we can reset? either right as NY closes or at around midnite? If that's the case, couldn't one just open 2 different US accounts with 2 different resets and just move the money back and forth?

  6. The reset is associated with server maintenance.

There is a US , a European and an Asian server.

  7. Two resets times happen at the middle of trading:
US/European servers => in the middle of Asian markets' trading session
Asian servers => in the middle of US markets' trading session

It would be much better if IB set the reset time at the time where both Asian & US markets are closed.

Currently you need to request for change. IB will do it only during weekends.

There are some disadvantages of opening 2 accounts to overcome this limitations. Commissions and interests are counted separately. Since you split, your trading cost would be higher.

Together with the compounding effect, it seems not a good idea to do.

I don't know how easy it is to switch money. I don't think we can switch money on the fly (instantly). If there are some delays, there are some losses, not to say inconvenience.

  8. 1. The hk server reset is not "in the middle of the US markets' trading session."
    2. LMAO ... when exactly are "both Asian & US markets are closed."

Get over it. For fuck sake ... some of you are whinging cry-babies. Your supposed to be traders ... tough, capable, adaptable. Those of you who are still cry-babies are not traders yet. Grow up.

Just a note: the people who have whinged on these threads over the last 4 years (since I've been poking the stick at them) don't last. If you find yourself whinging and crying on these threads just make a note to yourself that you will NEVER make it as a trader.

    Strange but true. :)

PS. Thanks for the huge giggle ... I just read the "it shouldn't be hard to have at least two reset times for each server" comment. So you really want to be down twice do you?

From 4 PM EST to 7PM EST. That's after the US close and prior to the open in Australia.

  10. Notice that he has already rejected that time set ... many consider that after hours trading in the US is important to them and thus, the market "is not closed."

IB have already chosen the two least disturbing times to do server maintenance activities. The actual reset time experienced by individuals is also tighter than the times when servers can go down. But if one wants full access to European, AsiaPac, and US trading then one needs two servers - and one probably wants that option to improve response time anyway.
