Here's the forex basics regarding pips, size, conversion, major pairs, etc (from the book "17 Proven Currency Trading Strategies (2013)")

The "TABLE 1.2 : Margin and Leverage" is hard to understand as it's counterintuitive:
the more leverage seems to mean the less margin requirement :)

More leverage means more debt, and more debt you take out the more collateral you will need to provide. While not identical, think of margin as a collateral.

So if you want to trade 1 standard lot (eg. 100,000), you need to have at the minimum of $1,000 in your account at all times. If, at any time, the account drops below $1,000, you will get a margin call.

That must be the schizo-logic :)
One first should clear what is bigger: a max leverage of 20:1 or 500:1 :)
One would think 500:1 is bigger, but they mean it exactly the other way :)
Ie. using some unnatural sicko-logic, IMO :)

Damn, all those smilies are making my head spin.

Anyway, if I take 500:1 leverage (gulp!!), that just means for every $1 I have in my account, I'm taking out $500 in debt ($2 = $1000, $5 = $2500, etc). And more leverage you use, more margin you will need to offset any possible losses. What's so schizo-logic about that? Or have I further misunderstood your sarcasm? (I can't decide on which to use: this  or this :), or maybe this :finger:).
