Off topic slightly, but when there is a major hub of the internet down, what determines if my internet traffic can get routed around that hub or just dies? There have been times where my cable provider can't ping IB because of some network malfunction but my DSL provider can. But my traffic starts at the same physical location. Why can't the cable company (in this situation), route their traffic through competitor's lines so at least you aren't completely dead?

  2. In case you couldn't tell from the tone of the earlier posts, your facts are not welcome in this IB bashing thread. Thanks.

  3. IB is right on this. Here's deal. Sometimes isp's will do maintenance which sometimes will block the port that IB comes in on.

I have had to call Time Warner twice here in san diego to talk to them about it. They knew what I was talking about and they fixed it.

    No problems lately.

i had similar problem in hong kong a week ago. I could go to most address but not to IB (and thus TWS). Off the head I blamed IB for the problem but it turned out some of the routes were broken on the ISP's end. You can verify this by doing a trace route to the IB gateway and see where the route stops.

  5. Thanks for the info.

As a side note, I used to have DSL as a backup. I now use wireless via a Sprint aircard as backup to either a cable or electrical failure. I didn't need it today, but it sounds like some of you could have used it.

  6. I can login into TWS, but it shows nothing in there right now. I will try again on Sunday and Monday. I have Time Warner cable. This is the 1st time this has happened to me. I know its a Saturday, but I thought you should at least be able to login.

No, IB need to change the port it is using. Currently TWS is using port 4000 to communicate with IB. They need to change this to port 80 (http/webbrowser) or port 443 (better, https).

Also using port 80/443 is solving the issue that corporate firewalls are blocking other ports (so this port 4000). If IB start using SSL/https (443) as port, then this can simply pass the firewall.

Please go to IB 'New feature Poll' and search for 'proxy' and vote them all.
