Most banks charge for incoming wires. Do you know one that doesn't? Bank I use: www.commerceonline.com Incoming Domestic or International Wire (to a personal account): FREE Incoming Domestic or International Wire (to a business or other organization): $10 Outgoing Domestic Wire: $15 Outgoing International Wire: $30
IF you accept a check that you suspect is NSF, you can call the bank it is written on and request a "verification of funds" in that account. It's done thousands of times a day by retail outlets. I have saved myself grief over the years by employing this technique.
Thanks for the tip. Would you happen to know if the bank will also tell you whether there is a stop payment on the check?
Lobster: They may, I have never asked that, but it seems to me that if there was a stop payment, then the answer to the original question would be "no". Either way you'd be ahead of the game.
