True and sad. I left the corporate rat race at 27-- and i was shocked at how many folks were out and about when i use to be sitting in my cubicle as a slave. I built my business to run while i was at work, and when i was able to quit, i had a permanent 6 day weekend-- as biz took a day or less per week. So it took awhile to get use to free time, this is why/how i got into the markets. Cant imagine waiting till 65 to break free. #crazy. surf
I would like to add the “West Coast Version” (just couldn’t resist): Grow up in “Bel-Air & Beverly Hills” Follow the Dead from 75-82…including all New Years shows in San Francisco/Oakland Go to University in Colorado & Ski Vail or Aspen all winter (continue Dead shows) Graduate with secure job in family biz…but chuck it all & Discover “The trading” Jerry dies in 95…the party ‘s OVER…exit stage left to Maui…the internet rolls in (for the trading).. … but windsurf North Shore every day for 6 Years instead …(“F” the trading!!!) Meet European Girl on Maui…move to Bulgaria for 12 years with summers in Greek isles & shopping trips to Italy (Maui got too crowded-overbuilt-FINISHED... & the Aloha got squeezed out) …but got back in “the game” again in Europe 06 Married my Soulmate & moved back to the States to a beach(2016)…a place that’s warm in the Winter (Europe winters got too cold) & has some Kitesurf Wind & Waves… some place called…Jupiter, Florida (but taking Caribbean vacations when the month is “positive” & going to investigate spending summers in Spain/Ibiza…this July to find out) Hey …but our parents wouldn’t give us the full power of that “Trust fund”…so they gave us… “an allowance with credit cards (paid by them-for control)”…and now at this advanced age of 57…my bro & I are the “beneficiaries” of that Trust fund you mention…but unfortunately… the “Step-Monster” will probably out- live us both………..Ces’t la vie………………… “Whoever said Money doesn’t buy Happiness…has been Shopping in the WRONG STORE” …(David Lee Roth)
Surprised how many people on here are spooners. I moved to Maui from Oahu to windsurf and have been here since about 2001, except for one move to Carmel briefly. Living up country the area looks just like it did 20 years ago. Maui to crowded? - well maybe if you compare it to when it was nothing but kane fileds. Having lived in San Francisco went to plenty of dead concerts and to Gerry's funeral at Golden Gate park. Spent a summer in Italy and want to get over to the Greek islands to visit. Left home at 15, more like the home left me. I had my own studio apartment at 16 which I paid for from my after school jobs. My old man died rich but believed in the school of hard knocks, so he left me $0 - a priceless lesson in hindsight.
I also have wealthy relatives but unfortunately, they believe the same way as your father and none has "filtered down' to me...... I find it interesting the way so many great posters/traders come from the "alternative" world. Be it deadheads, bikers, musicians, gamers, or any other counter-cultural types. These people "think" differently than the herd which naturally provides a head start in the markets. I came to age in the hardcore scene, specifically a subsector known as straight edge --- many of my lifelong values were formed in my youth in this counter culture--- Not having a trust fund or even my parent's credit cards, in my early 20's, I realized that, although I still liked the energy of the scene and the sounds--- that is was go nowhere and I didn't want to be poor all my life embracing some empty "values" and not "selling out". I met my heroes of the scene and was mostly unimpressed, although there have been a few exceptions. This led to business, the markets, etc.... but the core beliefs of DIY, think for yourself, and don't trust the "man" remain forefront even into my late middle age. Make no mistake, i still struggle with some addictions (food ) and have a few remaining issues with concentration and hyperactivity but I am making improvements.... I continue to keep my eye on the underground scene as I believe all cultural change starts in the underground prior to it being mainstream. This idea has helped me tremendously in helping to forecast trends etc in economics and society at large. It has been invaluable to me as a trader and market forecaster. surf
