There is no doubt as you get older the most important thing is your health. A billionaire on their death bed would gladly hand over every dollar to get well. I live on an island where the lifespan for those over 65 is the longest of the 50 states -per the CDC. I can assure most people on this island are not driven/purposeful types at all - in fact they are typically the opposite. They care little about material success yet put a high value on having lots leisure time, they are not the worrying types at all, & are slow/laid back. I am in this category for sure. I see nothing wrong with a life devoted to pleasure.
Reminds me of an old "The Far Side" comic. One of the most esoteric panels ever published by Gary Larson.
I was sitting at Bridgehampton (NY), Starbucks and I over heard a mother telling her recent college graduate son who at the time was working for a magazine, " come to Aspen with us for the holidays, you don't have to live a structured life" IE we have money and influence you don't need to work for the men.
I hate my 9-5. It's just a circle jerk of people trying to gain respect from higher ups who couldn't care less. I've got money now but live extremely frugal as I just need enough to bail 2 yrs from now. I've got a plan in my head; it's messy, and god knows I can't find the energy to start it, but there's no way I'm sticking around on this pattern.
I have two sons from an earlier marriage. We ( my ex and I) sent them to the Haverford School ( an exclusive all boy prep school). After several years i decided to look at what fate was met by the majority of grads. Boy was i shocked! Lots of artists, writers, and other hippie jobs-- to be sure there were a few lawyers, doctors, politicos and biz folks but the majority were in the arts. Nothing wrong with this if u have a trust fund. Otherwise its a rough life. My kids didn't have trust funds, so they went into public school really quickly. Best move i could have made.
This guy had a trust fund and was working at Newsweek and being a junior employee couldn't get the holidays off. ps congrats on sending kids to Haverford School and the new bambino.
TRUSTAFARIANS-Ski, Surf, travel, use to follow around the Dead now they follow Phish.. parents or grandparents live in Palm Beach in the winter, The Hamptons or Nantucket in the summer months.
Money does not matter when health comes on the line. Actually missing out the fun while working hard to earn and save money sounds like a regrettable decision I've ever made. So every once a week I started chilling out and relaxing during my rest day.
